Now, before people begin to beat me up as "hating Anime" I really love anime and have seen many hundreds of titles. That said I have been really put off by several titles this fall.
Black Clover is slow and obnoxiously "screamy"...
King's Game is simply a torture flick made in 12 parts.

Is it just that several titles are "dark" this time or are we seeing a change in anime?

Yes and no. There seems to be a lot of try-hard edgy shows this season that I was hyped for, but now have already dropped.

But the SoL, romance, and comedy shows so far are good.

I meant to toss Zodiac War into that group as well. I was one and done with that.

I'll admit that I'm one of those types who'll toss a lot of anime off a cliff into a deep lake given how bad things develop. So far, there's two that are in my "watch" list:

Kino's Journey - The Beautiful World
The Ancient Magus' Bride

and really that's about it. Twocar, Konohana Kitan and Code: Realize are holding on, but the rest have already been relegated into the junk pile.

Much like Hollywood movies I feel some years have higher quality products than others.

I see where you're going OP and the 2010s is hardly close to being my favorite decade for anime.

There are definitely a few clunkers (Black Clover, Dies Irea, Kings Game) but overall I'm finding this to be a pretty solid season so far. It's still very early but I'm personally looking at close to 20 shows so far that I'm at least going to spend more time with, a handful of which are guaranteed watches unless they suddenly tank themselves.

I was actually asking because I am considered an "old guy" in anime as I am 54 and grew up with Gatchaman and Space Battleship Yamoto. I was looking for a more up to date point of view. This is not to say I do not like dark anime like Helsing Ultimate or Claymore. I enjoyed Black Lagoon even with the heavy violence... but I go back to my first comment on the series this fall.
That said I enjoyed Ancient Magus Bride so far

So far all but one of the anime I'd planned to see this season are living up to my expectations. Now I did moderate my expectations based on the genre so none of them had an insurmountable hype wall to hurdle. (Though Ancient Magus' Bride did have to hop a hill which it cleared by leaps and bounds.) And one I'm watching more because I want to know learn about the subject. (Two Car)

Does there seem to be a lot of disappointing anime this fall?

There's a lot of anime this fall, so yes.

In proportion to recent seasons? Too early to tell. Black Clover never appealed to me so it's not a disappointment. Neither did MMO Junkie or Two Cars, but so far they've been at least competent.

I actually think this season is pretty strong, a lot better than last season for example.
I like some of the violent shows so far this season, specifically Zodiac War and Garo. It's just a matter of taste.
Dark and violent shows have always been a staple of anime, and this season has a few more than usual I guess. I don't quite think it's a big trend right now or anything.

Ehh. I would say you are right and wrong. Some shows like Black Clover seem to be pretty disappointing (I honestly expected this after reading the manga and not really enjoying that), but some shows so far have been absolutely amazing. Two shows that I am personally watching right now and enjoying are the second season of Blood Blockade Battlefront and The Ancient Magnus' Bride (which is already a contender for my favorite anime of the year).

Depends on what you're watching. I haven't felt disappointed by the shows I was looking forward to.

Black Clover on its own has reached the pinnacle that a generic battle shounen can reach. It's pretty enjoyable.

I mean no? Black Clover is turning out amazing right now. Pretty much even better then I was expecting with how good it looks. And Pierrot doing a great jobn expanding the story.

I was really looking forward to Just because! and the first 2 episodes were even better then I was hoping.

BBB&B came back guns blazing with Yutaka Nakamura opening the season.

Girl's last tour is the first surprise of the season. Giving this grim post-apocalyptic world tons of charm.

And I can go on and on. No disappointment yet. Everything delievered in my case.

Given how these types of threads show up every season lets just say that EVERY season is disappointing and we should find something else to do with our time.
