Huh, so what was the topic? I forgot, but more closely knit and moderated discord are your best bet. Some of the CR groups here have a Discord for their members, as well as unaffiliated discords that can be found in the Chit Chat Section of the forums.

Did I take a wrong turn at Albuquerque while reading this thread?

Shh, it is alright. As an onii-san of everyone on the forums, I will slowly unhijack this thread to its proper direction.

something about voice chat seems so scary! I guess I'm just nervous of weirdos/creepers

There is a group chat which you can make for specific people outside of servers. Acts exactly like Skype groups. As for why Discord, management and usability. You can make specific sections (both chat and voice.) of a server only accessable to certain people. There is even a limiter to how many people can join voice if you so choose. Just take a look into any popular server, and you'll see why.

Bots have always been extremely useful tools, and you have a ton of options for specific tasks for server users as well. I have a bot that notifies everyone of game raids in my server. To which only people that have the game role can see.

I don't like communicating verbally [using the voice chat], but Discord's dark design is soothing for the eyes.

Just a bunch of kids yapping at each other. If that's what you're into.
