I created this topic to see if people share my opinion in regards to censored VNs in steam. We are all adults here (probably) so lets keep this civilized.

Is Steam's targeted censorship warranted?

I find weird that Steam is actively trying to censor sex, which is a beautiful thing if done correctly and depicts the act of love between 2 characters, then they defend this by stating that they want to create a "family friendly" platform, but then they actively publicize games where death is featured and somewhat incentivized.

Is the act of lovemaking, or a quickie in a quiet area of a park, even if virtual, really that much worse than the taking of a life?

This whole topic reminds me of the Tracer's butt controversy, where the father was more preoccupied that his child saw the back side of a character, in a somewhat suggestive manner, than the actual death depicted in Overwatch.

But this is my opinion and I would like to read other points of view so let us discuss.

Are they censoring all the VNs? That's stupid. Most of those VNs still wouldn't be appropriate for children even if the nudity and sex were censored. If they want to offer censored and uncensored versions, that's fine, but if they are only offering censored versions...then that is ridiculous, and people are just going to go pirate the uncensored versions.

Honestly, if they can't offer me the complete version of a game, then I won't buy from them. Then again, I've never had much use for Steam.

Do they censor out the gore and sex in Wolfenstein The New Order?

Steam tries to keep their titles offered at most r-rated. Sometimes, though, the companies that make them offer free patches themselves on the community forums section of Steam for the specific game.

I also have quite alot of VNs on steam and i uncensor them to the best of my ability, but what i find ridiculous is the lengths that steam goes to censor some games but not all.

Why cant all games be uncensored?

Because sadly, we live in a world where if a handful of people are offended, they will yell as loudly as possible to sound like the majority. I for one refuse to purchase a game that has been heavily censored. I want to play the game the developer envisioned. Not the game tailored to someone with thin skin.

That's a great idea. Censored on Steam so they can say they aren't selling AO games, and a free patch from the developer.

That would be amazing if steam didnt try now to remove said patches from the forums and is activly removing such posts.

What im doing is going o winged cloud and to darker studios and get the patch directly

Oh well. While it does suck that they're trying to prevent us from patching H-content in, all it does it make it a little less convenient for us H-gamers but by no means will it stop us.

It would certainly be nice if an adult friendly digital distribution service would be created. I am sure the digital distribution model is the only thing allowing Japanese eroges to be published overseas.

Well, there is MangaGamer and dlsite so we do have some options. I just prefer having all my H games on Steam just for the sake of convenience.

I mean I don't see the problem at all. if steam doesn't want that they don't want it.Why does it need to be on steam? people are just obsessed with steam tbh. It is actually annoying people always asking for patches on the forums, Why do you need a patch? just buy the game with the content on the said developers site. You want to piss off steam for not allowing it? then stop buying shit from them and patching it....

Is it really that hard to go to the dev site and buy the game rather than from steam?

The whole "omg its censored" thing really pisses me off too, what if it isn't censored and it is just simply a different version? Example Little Buster English edition isn't censored it is just not EX. People just think not 18+ = censored which isn't true. In LB's case there are more people who don't want that content thus the version they choose wasn't the EX version of the game.

I don't see it as that big of a deal as long as the developers offer a patch or alternative version as well. Steam can conduct it's storefront business as it wants to and you have to remember that these games being on Steam in the first place, even in neutered forms, get's them in front of way more eyeballs than would be the case anywhere else.

Besides, I would personally add that if the game is worth playing in the first place then a few sex scenes being edited shouldn't suddenly make it not worth playing.

the current model is just fine. steam selling nudity-free versions and devs offering the adult patch works well enough and avoids getting steam in trouble. the patches are simple to install and the info on them is typically located somewhere accessible.

Due to the heavily ingrained religious undertones of the west we have really really stupid rules concerning sexuality and the depiction of sex. Meanwhile the most brutal thing you can think of is no big deal lol. In my mind it is less that people are offended and more that the entire cultural norm is kinda super backwards.

The problem is that Steam actually has started cracking down on external links for Visual novels and their uncensor patches due to abuses of a few low quality games for like 0.99 cents but external links for just the H-scenes.

Other than that I mean...this rule interestingly doesn't apply to western developers which fly about as close to the sun as you can concerning sex. In my opinion things like sexuality really shouldn't be censored but should have an 18+ warning at most. Steam may at one point have been a good place for the spread of visual novels but in general their rules make it an inappropriate platform.

I much prefer Mangagamer's online shop for all your visual novel needs. They have a good thing going, just like the Japan releases they tl and release various Nukige in order to build up to translating/having the money to translate passion projects of Moe-ge goodness like princess Evangile.
