Hmm seems the UFO Ultramaiden Valkyrie is only the OAV's and not the main show.

If you look at the graphic used, it does say "The OVA Collection" below the title.

Checking Funimation's own site, they do not appear to have the series itself, only these 8 OVA's (which they list as "season 3" and "season 4").

Sorry for the misunderstanding. It wasn't a VPN, or a change in language settings. It was more like restricted content. To explain myself, I watch most of the simulcasts with Spanish subtitles (it's Spanish by default in my settings), and I live here in the US (USA IP). Some titles like Black Clover wouldn't show up when I start the PS4 or Mobile app, and in the browser would only show English subtitles as available. To be able to watch it in the PS4 app for example, I had to go to settings and change from default to English; only then it would appear in my queue. Same happened for a couple of titles per season and big ones like Naruto Shippuden or Gintama; even though the availability of many of those titles were worldwide ex Asia.

Something happened between Tuesday and Wednesday that CR made available all of those English-only restricted anime and now show all the subtitle languages that had available. The ones remaining in English only are the ones that were acquired only for English speaking territories, and therefore have no other language option. I think so.

I'm making too much fuss about it, but I prefer watching anime in the language I'm more comfortable with. Anyway thanks Crunchy for making those series available, and don't change it back.

In some (especially older) cases, Funimation may have chosen only North America rights because that was their whole business plan at the time. In this case, it seems that Black Butler seasons 1 and 2 were licensed for the UK by Manga UK, AKA Manga Entertainment, AKA Manga Animatsu:

See this post for "rumors" about why that company won't sublicense to CR.

Season 3, "Black Butler: Book of Circus is released in the UK by Anime Limited," according to http://blog.alltheanime.com/black-butler-book-of-circus/

Anime Limited has licensed a few titles to CR for users in your region. The more people watch their content on CR, the more royalties they get, and the more likely they are to make similar deals in future. http://www.crunchyroll.com/publisher/animelimited

CR's UFO Ultramaiden is season 3 so you would need to watch the previous seasons elsewhere

Thank you Crunchy roll for end of the year goodness from my childhood. I remember picking up UFO Ultramaiden Valkyrie years ago and falling in love with it's simple plot and Tenchi Muyo space women

If something like that happens to a set of anime from the same publisher, it would normally be an approvals issue ... for instance, a bilingual contract that read in English as if rights were more restrictive, and the rights owner gets back and says, "no, that is a misread, the language in the Japanese contract is clear, you have these language rights for your entire streaming territory."

But for it to happen all at once to a range of series from different publishers, that sounds like they fixed a glitch ... for example, maybe a series that originally came with English rights and had other language rights added later did not get the updated language rights set correctly, or the subtitle language filter misinterprets the database entry when it's set up some particular way, and since it allowed the new rights in the territory where those subtitles are used the most heavily, the problem was not noticed.

Then a script run on the flawed database entries or a fix of the language filtering routines, and, voila, subtitle options appear that were not there before.

Every anime fan needs to watch Excel Saga at least once, IMO. Or read the manga (... if you can find it, nowadays).

I thought it was very good when I watched it last year subbed on Funi's service before the license-sharing.

As the description suggests it's a mature and violent series like Black Lagoon, and 100% student council - free.
