Some of the dialogue is a little poor, but the visual style and overall mood is very cool. It's definitely looking better than I thought it would.

This looks so far to be a pretty faithful adaption of the manga..

though gally er alita eyes are hard to get used to. Then again she is inhuman so maybe that the point.

Originally called Battle Angel Alita or Battle Angel from way back. Never saw them, but of what I understand this movie looks like it was adapted and goes wide off the mark by judging from the trailer. And those eyes....just too weird, like looking at someone's waifu giving 3D form

Looks like Cameron decided to jump a rocket cycle over the Uncanny Valley in this one.

It's like they think the anime fans will like it more if they make the actress look more like an anime character?
Give us some credit, please.
If they're going to do that, they might as well have animated it in CGI or altered the other actors' faces for some consistency
It's kinda freaky

I can't even imagine the excoriating critical response to the eyes when the advance screening comes.

They both went too far and yet not far enough with her design. If they wanted to go for the hyper-human realism the eyes needed to be toned down. Or, if they wanted to go with a more doll-like appearance they needed to add that feel to more than just her eyes. Tone down the hyper-realism in the skin and give her a more doll-like aesthetic to her face. The metallic facial markings she is sometimes depicted with, if incorporated into her facial design would have likely saved some of the uncanny valley feel with her current oversized eyes.

In the manga Alita / Gally is described as being "doll-like". While I agree it threw me off at first I've watched the trailer some two dozen times and I'm loving the design choice. As a huge, die-hard fan of the manga and OAVs I'm super pumped. It's looking like they're going to start from the beginning and while it's not a one-to-one adaptation from what I've seen so far they're being pretty faithful to the source. It's feeling a little like they've blended the manga and OAVs with a few new elements of their own. (BTW the OAV was not a perfect adaptation and had several story deviations and new characters.)

I've watched every reaction video I can find, from die-hard fans like myself to people who know nothing about the source, and to a one they've been positive. As for myself I'm not going to get too hyped because we've been let down by live adaptations of anime and manga way too many times. I'm not wanting a perfect re-telling of the original (manga or OAV) but something that carries the heart of the source faithfully. If Cameron is the fan he says he is and based on this trailer I have hope.

This is largely my take as well. It's definitely weird at first but it really does fit the character. Plus, it's sort of a cheeky way to push back against the usual crowd who say that they wish live action anime based movies looked more like actual anime, and I can appreciate that cheekiness.

Ugh the eyes make this a joke, I could see if ALL the nonhuman characters had some similar design, but just her, no. And as to making her look doll like? Uh no. A young face makes eyes look bigger ( they proportionately take up more of your face) not the other way around, which is obvious from this experiment. He really needed a younger or at least a younger looking actress if he wanted to capture the true aesthetic of her look. Or instead of CGIing giant eyes he should have CGIed her face to be younger.

Wow the negativity on this thread is amazing. I'm just jazzed that they are actually making this thing after 20 years of rumours and promises.

I mean really, I watched the OAV on VHS.

So did I.

And honestly, it looks very cool. It looks like Cameron, Rodriguez and company were faithful to the source, and that makes me a lot happier than I usually am when animated series or films are adapted.

Gally's eyes are an interesting choice. I'm not sure it was the right one, because I'm afraid it will be a distraction from everything else achieved. But I'm willing to give it a shot, and more than that, I'm willing to love it.

To be honest I didn't really notice the size. I just thought they looked... intense.

I appreciate that for some people the choice in the eye design is off-putting. I don't share that feeling but I respect it. I just hope that in the months to come as we learn more about the movie people will be willing to re-consider should the movie be living up to the expectations.
