I honestly do not care if the characters smoke in shows or not. Like everyone else says, people smoke in real life. When you ask for something like smoking to be pulled out, then you go down a rabbit hole that seems to have no end. Eventually, people could even be asking for violence to be removed. I don't have a problem with it.

PS: Black Leg Sanji.

why do fictional animated characters need to smoke? they get nothing out of it. this could be the main or a side character, when ever they need a break, or some stress relief, its not cool in real life and its not cool in fiction. should we see them doing house work, something youd never see, no its pointless. smoking kills, and my grandma died from smoking too much all her life. i mean is it really necessary for them to smoke? not at all and i wouldnt mind if that was censored, maybe blood and other things. it also seems to be a bit cliche in anime, we get it, you smoke, now get rid of it.

They feel the need to smoke because they are written to be smokers. They are written to be smokers because smoking is also something that happens in real life, and is a character flaw and trait that adds depth to a character as a result of this. Just as in real life, them "getting something out of it" is irrelevant. It's also very visually easy to show as far as habits of a character go, since smokers often are easy to spot around others, and the reaction others have towards their smoking also can lead to interesting moments.

You do see characters in plenty of anime and such doing house work in small amounts, as well, if it fits their character. Smoking being pointless or not is, again, irrelevant to it being depicted in fiction.

Sorry to hear about your grandmother dying from smoking, but that doesn't mean that people are suddenly going to magically stop smoking or that fictional characters have to abide by your sensibilities. One of my grandmothers died of a stroke, caused after surgery she needed due to years of obesity taking a toll on her health. That hasn't made me think that we should outlaw characters eating large amounts of cake or something and being unhealthy eaters in fiction, or something, and it certainly doesn't cause any problem. If anything, having characters do things in shows and such that could have potential negative long-term consequences actually makes them seem more "real" and more interesting, since in real life people do countless things that are bad for their health yet are enjoyable.

Though when you mention not minding if it was censored, that makes me think that it really isn't because you feel it is pointless or bad in any way to depict - censoring after all doesn't do anything but draw attention to anything that is censored. I know you're probably trolling with this, but it seems like a poor attempt if that is the case.

Real people smoke. Fictional characters smoke. In Japan, smoking apparently is "sexed up" as it used to be in America as being "adult-like," so a lot of fiction depicts characters as smokers partially to show "maturity." Then again, a lot of characters who smoke in anime are wholly "immature," so my own argument may not have much weight.

Anime characters are portrayals of humans and that is something that humans do.
