So I've only recently gotten into watching anime; most of my life I've avoided it because of the weird/creepy stigma surrounding it. Being an avid gamer my whole life, I finally decided a couple years ago to give Sword Art Online a go because I like the concept and I wanted to open my horizons. Nevertheless, not too long into the show and you're 'treated' to an awkward shower scene with his younger sister/cousin/whatever (the really awkward sexual tension between them was already creepy). It adds nothing to plot or character development, its just shameless fan service for teenage boys. This kinda shit is not what i'm looking for.

I want to make this clear: I'm far from a prude or saint lol. I'm totally ok with women dressed provocatively and being sexual/ized in general, as well as outright nudity and porn (although cartoon shit *does not* do it for me)- the problem is when it's paired with anime's grotesque obsession with underage, adolescent girls. Its really, REALLY creepy, and it makes me want to turn away from it all. Most of the time its just completely out of place. Nevertheless I did finish up SAO and moved on to other animes that piqued my interest- most of which I've liked. I'll run down a list of what I've seen, in more or less the order i can remember watching them, noting if I liked it and whatever stood out to me.

Sword Art Online (1 & 2)- Despite my criticism, I overall enjoyed it, I guess, although the second season (alfheim or whatever) was garbage. SAO 2 (the gun game shit?) was alright.

Rurouni Kenshin- great show; definitely enjoyed it more than I thought I would. I haven't checked out the live action movie yet (not a big fan of live action conversions, are there any animated movies? while i was watching the show i thought there was a lot of potential for a movie or show season that centered around his earlier self while he was still battousai the manslayer or whatever.)

Fate/Stay Night/Unlimited Blade Works & Fate/Zero (something like that lol) - Easily one of my favorites. The concept of the show is interesting and I thoroughly enjoyed the execution. Likeable characters, pretty good action, little to no fan service- more shows like this please.

The Seven Deadly Sins- Another one near the top of my list. Great concept and I'm eagerly awaiting the actual 2nd season.

Bleach - Ah, here it comes. Oh yes, I spent several months watching it every day until I was done with it all. What a chore lol. The first 3 seasons really suck you in and get you hooked. Then the filler arcs start, and you realize if you're gonna watch it all, you're in for a long marathon. Overall I liked the show, although it definitely drops off towards the end. I did watch the (4?) movies as well.

Hellsing/Ultimate- YESSSSS. Easily one of my favorites, though who would that surprise. The main character is awesome and I really enjoyed the violence (one of the things that throws me off about a lot of anime like bleach is watching people slice and stab each other with swords with there being virtually no blood or gore- I dunno why, but I find it detracting from the experience.)

RWBY- So this would be the first (and probably only) show I'll say I didn't like- like most of the shows I picked to watch, I thought it had an interesting premise, but this one poorly executed it. Some of you may have seen my posts in the RWBY thread; for those who haven't, my main problem with the show is the god-awful voice acting. It's SO BAD. The show feels cheap in general- the animation is cheap looking, the voice acting is terrible, the script itself is laughable- I really want to like this show, but these major flaws are too much to handle. I think I watched the first 3 volumes, and while I'd like to finish the story off, I'm not particularly in a hurry to go back.

Ajin Demi Human- Pretty good show, liked it more than I thought I would. The pacing is a bit slow for me honestly.

Berserk- The original show from the 90s might be my favorite so far. Its got some... moments lol but the violence and brutality really appeal to me. Plus I really enjoy shows from this pre-CGI time period, where every frame was drawn by hand- most people now don't like it anymore, but I really appreciate the artistic value there. I'm really, really disappointed with the reboot- its ridiculously, cringely bad. Terrible waste.

Fist Of The North Star- Amazing show. Wish I had grown up with this show lmao it puts GI Joe to shame. YOU ARE ALREADY DEAD. This show needs a freakin reboot! Definitely excited for the video game coming out loool. Oh and I watched the movie although its basically a rehash of the first half of the show.

Death Note- Good show. Definitely different that what I had watched up to this point. I didn't think I would like it as much as I did. Definitely gets you hooked.

Mirai Nikki- I'm kinda on the fence about this one. It was a decent show, i guess. The creep factor really gets turned up at the end. One of the cringiest scenes I've ever seen in any show lol

Attack On Titan- Pretty good show, really interesting at first. Its kinda slower than I expected, but not too bad overall.

One-Punch Man- Pretty good show, I guess. Main character is kinda boring lol. Show is fairly entertaining though.

Inuyasaha- Finished this recently. Not too much to say about it more than I enjoyed it. Could have been a bit more violent but overall a pretty good show. Watched the 4 movies as well.

Fate/Apocrypha- Oh boy... what happened here. it definitely adds an element of creepy fan service that wasn't in the previous shows. Show was fine until it shows Jack the Ripper- an 8 year old girl in a g string. I mean come on. Why are (some) anime creators such pedos? Beyond that, I guess it wasn't too bad overall, I enjoyed it I suppose (still waiting for the last couple of episodes to come out)

Samurai Champloo- This is the most recent show I've finished. I wasn't sure about it at first, but it quickly grows on you. Fantastic show- Mugen is a fucking hoot in every scene he's in. I really wish this had more than 26 episodes.

So.. yeah. I'm pretty sure there are a couple I've forgotten to mention, but for the most part thats where I'm sitting. I also watched a couple of movies (Akira, Vampire Hunter D, one of the Devilman movies [That was... interesting lol], etc). Sorry that was so long, I felt that it was necessary for an accurate recommendation thread. If I had to pick a top 3 out of this list I would go with 90s Berserk, Hellsing/Ultimate, and Fate series. Maybe FotNS instead, its hard to choose lol

By the way, a few weeks ago I made a post asking to remember the name of an anime that caught my eye- turns out it was The Seven Mortal Sins. No, just no. I made it about 4 minutes into the first episode before I had almost cringed myself into a coma. My god who comes up with this shit lol. None of that kinda shit please lol give me graphic violence/gore instead.

Thanks for sticking with me.

I just want to clarify, there are two series referred to as Nanatsu No Taizai, or the Seven Deadly Mortal Sins. One is a hardcore ecchi series, the other is a prototypical shounen.

The ecchi one is distinguished as Sin: Nanantsu No Taizai with Sin being the distinguishing feature, the other is simply Nanatsu No Taizai.

They are seemingly completely different.

There is ansolutely NO relation between these two series.

There is a 4 part OVA series that tells the story of how he got the scar on his face during the revolution. It was released by ADV films under the title "Samurai X." As ADV went out of business several years ago I'm not sure whether it is still available legally for western audiences. This OVA has a much darker tone than the TV series.

There is a film set within the time period of the TV series and felt like just a particularly long episode.

There are two other films called the "New Kyoto arc," which I know nothing about.

Finally there is a second OVA set after the end of the TV series. I haven't seen it but apparently it got mixed reviews.

yeah the first one is the seven deadly sins; the porn one is the seven mortal sins. and im painfully aware now that they aren't related in any way; the deadly sins one is one of the better animes ive watched. i had a hearty laugh when i watched that bit of the other one- who comes up with shit like this? its like they let the show get written by teenage boys. the concept of the show, again, is pretty interesting- i wish it was a real show instead of a cartoon porn.

thanks for the suggestions though. i figured i was going to see suggestions like full metal alchemist and cowboy bepop and stuff that was popular from cartoon network here in america- my only complaint with those shows is that they are pretty tame in the violence/gore category- its basically nonexistence to make them 'american tv friendly'. im really, really looking for more shows like berserk and hellsing- stuff that would not have been suitable for cartoon network lol.

i was actually thinking about checking out full metal alchemist next; one of the commenters on the last episode of samurai champloo recommended a show called katanagatari, claiming that its similar... yeah, dunno what they're smoking, but its not. I watched like 30 minutes of the first episode last night before turning it off- its pretty bad, and nothing like champloo. i felt like i was watching a kids show.

anyway thanks again for dealing with my horrendously long post

Based on what you've said, a few more ideas:

Trigun. It's an older series. No fan service really at all. Starts pretty comedic, gets more violent and dramatic as it goes along. Some really cool stylized gun-fights.

Kaze no Stigma: If you like (or don't mind) tsundere characters, this is a good show. Fan-service on the more mild side.

Strike the Blood: Moderate level of fan service, lots of gore. This is the show that I would say is most similar to Unlimited Blade Works, of the shows that I've seen.

Or for something a bit different:

Eureka Seven: the combat is mostly mecha (giant robots), but their is a lot of action, an intricately built world, and some great relationship building. Also, only a little fan-service, and all of it from adult women.

Bakemonogatari: Pretty high-levels of fan-service, mostly with seniors in high school (at least in the first season). Lots of gore, but little fighting--the protagonist is immortal, so his idea of a good fight is one where the opponent tires themselves out killing him. But great dialogue, interesting art-work, and a lot of creepy monsters.

Well I try my best not to recommend "Shit" but based on what you have posted I recommend the following

Bakemonogatar
i series(has occasional panty shot but tastfully done, lots of witty satire)
http://www.crunchyroll.com/bakemonogatari
ACCA13- has a retro style artwork. not fast paced but well done and a good mystery that isnt painfully obvious
http://www.crunchyroll.com/acca-13-territory-inspection-dept
I Cant understand what my husband is saying- I think these are like 5 min each and its otaku type comedy
http://www.crunchyroll.com/i-cant-understand-what-my-husband-is-saying
InuX Boku comedy/romance kind of supernatural. Its fun!
http://www.crunchyroll.com/inu-x-boku-secret-service
MushiShi again slower paced but its kinda relaxed supernatural. Not flashy but well done, damn near masterpiece!

My top recommendation would be Ergo Proxy, it's a very complex anime with tight storytelling and developed characters.

Elfen Lied is a very mature, violent anime. It does have nudity, but it's the nature of the story, and isn't pornographic. This, for me, is a classic that I adore.

Mobile Suit Gundam, the definitive mecha series. I'm referring to the original.

If you happen to like Mobile Suit Gundam, then I also suggest Gundam Wing, it's an ensemble and the characters really make this series.

Ninja Scroll

Sword of the Stranger

Afro Samurai

Violence Jack - An short old school violent OVA series though I haven't seen it. Manga is made by the dude who did Devilman.

Black Lagoon

Arslan Senki (TV) - Though I've heard the old anime has better art and direction with a much worse story.

Baccano - Story will seem disjointed but everything ties together.

Kaiji: Ultimate Survivor - Suspense thriller like Death Note

Yu Yu Hakusho

Hunter x Hunter (2011) - Though you might like the 90's version better, it's a lot slower and most people like the newer one better.

Hajime no Ippo (Premise will seem a bit iffy but give it a shot, action is awesome in it, hype af.)

Kenshin live action trilogy is dope and yes there was prequel about Kenshin's manslayer days during civil war. It's called Rurouni Kenshin: Trust and Betrayal. Much more violence and gore compared to the original anime, the most critically acclaimed out of the anime series.

Highly recommend FMA, doesn't go out of it's way for violence but it's a good story.

thanks for the suggestions; i'll check out some more of them.

I just finished watching FullMetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, which was pretty crazy. I wasn't sure how i felt about it at first but its a pretty great show. is it worth checking out the original series?

this isn't really anime, but I also watched the Spawn animated series which is fucking awesome. really wish they had continued it.

oh i did also watch Strike the Blood, which i really didn't like that much. The concept and action was cool but the constant fan service was really bothersome. the constant focus on a 12 year old girl, showing her in her panties or in the bath/shower was really just gross. i felt like a pedo watching it.

anyway sorry for bumping an old topic

Original FMA is great, it's on Netflix. My little brother thinks it's better than Brotherhood. Though personally I like give a little bit of time between adaptations of the same source material otherwise it's harder for me to judge the show for what it is instead of comparing.

BTW FMA and Bebop didn't skimp on gore to be kid friendly. The creator of the show just didn't think it would add to the experience. When they do they'll censore gore because govt laws in Japan restrict what's on TV and they need money from the broadcasting rights a lot of the time.
