Urusei Yatsura, City Hunter, Maison Ikkoku, & Legend of The Galactic Heroes are already on the list.

And speaking from experience, btw--The first season of Urusei was so badly done, compared to the later series, we've lost more first-timers that way, who say "Is the rest of the series like this??" No, it isn't.
(Starts with just transcribing Rumiko Takahashi's manga stories, and then...finds its own crazy direction.)

If you're going to start with UY, watch the first episode, and then skip over to the end-of-the-first-season recap episode--the "Spring Special", if you can find it--and pick up again around the mid-20's. You'll be glad you haven't missed much.

What's bad about it? Animation? Episode plots? And jeez, someone reported me

Sorry to be a pedant but they are both canon. Macross 7 describes DYRL as an in-universe movie created years after the events of the series.

Therefore the TV series is what actually happened and the movie is a historical record/propaganda piece. However, the later series depictions of Zentraedi more closely resemble the higher quality visuals used in the movie.

Haha, it's fine, don't worry about it. It's been about 5 years since I watched the entire Macross series (excluding Delta) so I wouldn't remember things like this. I'm up for people correcting my errors even moreso if they're helping others to enjoy the series. Personally, my favorite Macross show is Plus -- Yoko Kanno's song Voices is just very alluring, plus I think the love triangle here is more mature in some aspects than the melodrama that tends to occur in the other series -- but they're all good in their own ways.

And to stay on track, I guess I should throw the other Super Dimension Fortress series out there for discussion as I have yet to get through them.

SDF Calvery Souther Cross and Century Orguss.

Both: Badly primitive animation, and took its scripts directly from Takahashi's manga stories, which tended to be shrill, one-joke, male-bashing, ended on unresolved wacky chaos, and just paraded its girls as fantasy cheesecake--

At first, Lum was supposed to be a "threat" to "loser" Ataru's life, but after the characters caught on near the end of the first season, the show had a little more polish, Lum turned nice, Ataru turned smart, she transferred to his school, her pursuit became more of an innocent Jeannie/Shampoo-like crush that didn't know when to quit, and the two became the Ranma-like center of the general ref-silly craziness,

similar to the subbed Sgt. Frog. (A show very much inspired by the later Urusei, once it found its groove.)

MY thoughts exaxtly. She was gonna lose no matter what. The show made me angry that Hikaru’s ONLY purpose was to artificially keep the plot going. Kasuga is dumb. But, if he did cut her off from the jump I wouldn’t have experienced that insanely effective emotional tug in the first movie. Also, her reasons for liking him were so damn shallow, but that’s typical of girls around my age lol. But, I did pity her. The show has great episodes. Like 19, and the last couple episodes. The rest was ok. The music is incredible. Such a lukewarm feeling for the show but The movie fixed every gripe i had With the show. No Yuusaku, barely any Hatta & the other creep, and the ship that was mean to be. Also, more Madoka is a plus. She’s #2 waifu for sure, only behind NGE’s Asuka.

I also Felt like I was in The movie since the atmosphere was set so well. And that’s what spurned this forum in the first place. Fake nostalgia. I WANNA LIVE IN THE 80s!

You might like Va-11 Hall-A: Cyberpunk Bartender Action. It's a visual novel that imitates the look of old PC-98 games.

Oh, you might like the Silent Mobius movies too, cyberpunk/occult from 1991

Teito Monogatari is an 80s occult OVA, set in the Taisho era, has some good demon action

If you have to skip--and can't find the recap, although it helps to know the supporting characters introduced--the "reboot" happens right after, around Ep. 22, check back with that one.

I.. don't ever see myself getting into Gundam. ONE day I shall try it, but there are literally more iterations of it than my age number. That's daunting. I've only seen Totoro out of the Ghibli films that you listed, but only because I haven't gotten around to them. I really ought to knock out every noteworthy anime film in a weekend but I never do lol. Thanks for the recs man!

With Gundam, there's the UC timeline (including the ones I mentioned) and then everything else, which you can pick and choose from and can be watched in any order since they're not directly related to each other. And yeah, I didn't think you'd really be into it, but mentioned it anyway since those who lurk may be looking for vintage stuff too.
