For me, the most useless companions I can think of are Orihime, Chad, and Ishida from Bleach.

When I read the Soul Society arc, I expected Chad, Orihime, and Ishida to be resourceful to Ichigo's mission to rescue Rukia. Unfortunately, all three of them ended up getting shoved out of the spotlight, while said spotlight focused too much on the soul reaper captains and their lieutenants, e.g. Kenpachi Zaraki, Toshiro Hitsugaya, Renji Abarai, etc. I mean, why the hell would I care about the antagonists? Give me Ichigo and his three travelling companions, for God's sake!

You'd think that the most 'useless' companions actively work against both themselves and the lead, such as in Konosuba with Aqua.

Not really an anime, but a manga. In Vento Aureo the character Fugo os pretty useless.

It's so popular to bash on Aqua.

I've watched both seasons at least 3x over.. it's increasingly apparent that popular opinion is based on hype and ignorance.

Aqua isn't a companion - she's a co-lead. So if we would be basing this selection off your definition, you'd be wrong right out the gate.

Second, I don't think your working definition of 'useless' applies here - you may be confusing 'bad' with 'useless'. Useless means the character has no value - no use. This is my opinion on your definition, but I'd be interested to hear what 'useless' as a term in general means to you, not just in a character context.

Yet going deeper, to the untrained eye, Aqua seems to work against the party flat out - yet as we progress through the later arcs, its increasingly apparent Aqua's dominion is not unfounded. During the last of the S2 arc, Aqua fans finally get vindication with her victory over Hans.

In the last arc of season 1, Aqua was essential to the town's victory over the destroyer. The destroyer was already on a rampage prior to Kazama and Aqua's entrance to the world, and what we do know about the destroyer is that it was not able to be swayed in direction or influenced. Therefore, we can assume with strength that Aqua's presence or actions did not lure the destroyer there, unlike in the other episodes where she attracts spirits.

So, I call you out bro or broette.. stop talking shit bout my goddess. <3
