Oftentimes as writers, especially in the 21st century, we find ourselves far too isolated for our good. If you're an aspiring writer seeking publication, then you no doubt have found yourself in this situation; you scribble ideas and gather your thoughts, and just as you begin to break ground and the narrative flows, you might start to question your efforts, or perhaps your confidence is shaken. At one point or another, we've all questioned the quality of our writing. And, primarily, that's because we've broken this story on our own, in our minds. As we start to lock the words down, there's a weight that we subconsciously apply to every stroke of the keyboard.

Frankly, we can often be our own worst critic.

I am terribly nervous submitting a story. I think I may always be, but there's also that excitement that I'll be able to share it with other people; that's why we're storytellers! We want to share our stories, and make a career out of doing what we love. We'll never make a career out of it if we don't reach out, though.

I think writers, and creative people in general, need to look outward. We should seek collaboration, suggestion, and criticism. If you have that kind of support group, and one succeeds and gets published, then that's one person in the door! It's about helping each other, not brewing a competitive environment.

No one is here to stifle your creativity. Rather, I would love to create a compelling, cooperative circle that encourages a dialogue between peers. Allies in the trenches, when one advances, we all advance.

Welcome to The Writers Room!

Submissions

Our first discussion; have you ever submitted a story for publication? Whether magazine, novel, or a short story for an anthology? This is the first courageous step. If you want to make a career, you must eventually seek publication. So, share your tale below; were you published, did you even ever hear back from them, was it a paying gig? If you haven't, then why not? What's stopping you from submitting?

I haven't submitted anything yet. My first book is basically at the "done" state and has been for about a year now. I just don't like the idea of my work stopping. I like having the option to go back and revise things as I get better. I don't want to look back in ten years and say "I could have done this story so much better with the knowledge I have now" because I love the worlds and characters I create and I want to do them justice.

That said, I do plan to get over that hump and start submitting maybe sometime in 2018.

Hello, I really like what you're doing here.

I submit most of my writing to the internet, however, I haven't really tried to get published just yet.

Just recently I began sending a short story I wrote to a bunch of different publishers who happened to be looking for such a thing. None have liked it enough to publish yet, but I'm still going to keep sending it to people.

keep going! maybe try and improve it if they don't like instead of trying to send it to people who might not like it either

Thanks, and I'll probably do both tbh. I'll keep sending this particular story to publisher's who may like it but I'll also try to write better stories in the meantime.

Stories are never finished. We have to give them over to the world. It's not a question of looking back and questioning your work, if you wait you'll be looking back and asking why you never attempted to publish it. You can only work in the present; that is to say we will learn and gain knowledge our entire lives, it doesn't make the stories we've written any less valuable, though.

The knowledge you have now is worth it in the now.

Your work is abstract, of what I've read. Corrupt Heart and Fire (Rains?) From The Sky are both at an interesting intersection of the esoteric and worldbuilding. It feels a bit experimental, though. I've not had the time to read everything, but I wonder why you haven't attempted to submit? Both of those pieces seem interested in exploring further, and I think you could take that abstract and construct a short story from them.

yeah I've been published a few times, a short story in a zine, a few poems in books that I got distributor's pay sort of thing and it all started because a teacher once told me that he liked my work and found them to be simple yet interesting. granted I can't think of the times my stuff has been "posted" to the board for all to see. teachers sure can make a person seem awkward. this year going to work on getting myself published further with novels and more short stories. I'm hopeful.

That's awesome. When you were first published, did you frame it? It's one of the things I've been asked since I started submitting to magazines, if I'll frame it. If you still have copies of your published work to share I'm sure we'd all love to read it. These are the kind of stories that can inspire unpublished writers who don't feel like they have a way in, as it were.

If anyone is interested, I was thinking about a weekly, or even a monthly writing prompt; we'll have a basic idea, and everyone can write a short story around it, and then we can compare and look at other results.

My submissions would probably stay pretty short because I am already not writing enough for my long-term project as is, but I'd be interested if others are.

Thank you for the positive constructive criticism, I have to try and merge them all together and make like a "dead poets society" school or a poetry school on Tolizuna and each bit of individual writing I do that is random or unrelated can go in there and change it different aliases and also submit as author unknown or anonymous I thought about that idea the other day :D

There's so much going into this story it's even overwhelming me aha

No, I haven't, and I'm afraid that it could affect the career that I'm already in. I do love writing and creating stories, but I also love the career I have now. That's what's keeping me from publishing.

You could use a pen name if that is what you are implying. I probably would end up not using my real name in part because of my job if I were to publish.
