Plot Summary

Since the ancient times, the Kannagi priestesses have used their swords, or Okatana, to exorcise the creatures known as Aratama that brought chaos upon the world of man. These maidens were known as Tojis. They are a special task force within the police. They are allowed to have their Okatana on their person because they are government officials, but they mostly consist of middle school and high school girls who go to one of five training schools throughout the country. Though they mostly live normal school lives, if they are given a mission, they take their Okatana and unleash their powers, fighting to protect the people. This spring, the top Tojis from five schools across the country have been gathered for a customary tournament where they will use their abilities and fight for the top position. As the many Tojis trained and prepared for the upcoming tournament, there was one girl who was even more determined than the others on improving her swordsmanship. What lies before the end of her Okatana?

Episode 1

The action sure is something there. This is mainly setting the stage as it introduces the main characters in Kanami, Mai, and Hiyori, and the girls travel to the place where the sword tournament is happening. Kanami and Hiyori have some sort of unusual encounter and right off the bat she has gotten her attention. The tournament begins with Hiyori delivering a one-hit kill, while Kanami's first opponent is Sayaka. Sayaka's quickstep gave Kanami a hard time, while Mai's first opponent is someone who doesn't give a damn about the tournament. And then Kanami and Mai face off against each other, with Kanami showing why she's the #1 student there to set up the final match between her and Hiyori. But the final ended up turning into a battle royale with Hiyori wanting to fight the organizers instead. For a moment there, I thought that something was amiss with an entire tournament playing out in the first episode, but it turns out it wasn't as simple as that.

Episode 1

Dang, that was an intense start for the episode. It didn't take long for the episode to get straight into the action and fighting.

I think first episode is fine so far. Kanami Etou is cute and the show protrays her with a bright personality. The first episode is setting up for a fighting contest and we see some action already from the characters.

Hiyori is a pretty cool girl from her appearance and talent so far. There's some fan service with the baths but I'm not bothered by it. Hiyori is the character that impressed me but she still has a lot to learn.

I hope the pacing slows down a bit though...feels like a lot happened from just the first episode.

Episode 1

Things start off with a group of Tojis taking down a Aratama. Than we see a duel between Kanami and Mai who will represent their school. Once they arrive where the tournament will be held they run into Hiyori and Kanami can sense something from her. At the tournament both Kanami and Mai win their matches but later fight each other. The result of the match is Kanami winning and facing Hiyori at the finals. When they start Hiyori attacks the top Toji and easily stopped by her and is struck but Kanami comes in to save her. The two than have to run away as they are now wanted by the Toji.

The first episode was ok.. We got to see some nice fights but nothing to big for now.

I've certainly seen worse ways of introducing a cast than a tournament arc. The action itself was okay, the cg was ugly, and the characters one-note. I just didn't pick up on anything to really care about the hook at the end. Probably doesn't help that I'm tired of series abusing flash-step techniques for cheap action sequences.

So is it worth watching or is it something to avoid? Had it on my list for a while. Sounds pretty generic after all from what I saw on other anime forums.

Well, only time will tell if it is or not. It's based off a manga that barely got started, so it's hard to tell which direction the show is going. Nevertheless, it's pretty generic from the onset, but hopefully it will become less so moving forward. The fact that it got two cours means that they have something big in store. Of course whether or not it pans out, that's another matter entirely.

I don't see any particular strong points for or against watching it, at least from the first episode. Maybe it will have something to stand out from the dozens of magical battle school anime, maybe it won't. The lack of dramatic tension in the first episode wasn't promising, but then the end offered a small glimpse at some unstated conflict. So maybe things will kick off in episode 2. I'll probably watch the second if there's a dearth of any other competent action shows and/or buzz picks up for this.

Fairly generic start that had a pretty fast pace, though girls with swords and some battles hopefully keep my interest going.

Seems to me since this is an original production, they jammed all stuff fans in Japan like into the 1st episode instead of dragging things out to fit the pacing of a story unfolding in a manga/light novel/visual novel/video game. I hope this means we won't get the usual odd ending by episode 12 or 13.

I guess I can see the potential for this series, as it can be a decent avenge or revenge story with some good action scenes, but will the series reach this potential? Probably not to be honest, but hey I would like to be wrong. Edit - Looks like this is a two cour so I wonder how they'll fill all those episodes. Anyways cute girls as always.

It was at this moment I knew, I fucked up.

Ahhh yes... the classic teenage girls saving adult men from *insert noun here* type of anime.

The Battousai uses neither the Kamiya Kashin or whatever style you are using. He uses the Hiten Mitsurugi.

Maan, this show freakin' blows.

Nothing makes sense and there's this crappy pesudo-tension going on that I can't stomach. Pretty much not up my alley...

That was almost painfully generic, and it didn't look good or really have any particularly interesting characters to make up for it. The opening action scene was probably one of the lamest I've seen in a very long time, and the tournament fights weren't any better. That said, the twist near the end of the episode did peak my interest somewhat and the tiny cat girl plus foreign girl team might be a worth a chuckle or two. It saved itself from an instant drop at the end but I'm far from impressed.
