Taken for itself, this isn't that bad, though I doubt that what Sil is doing is what most people think when they hear some chick is going to make all their dreams come true.

Though, you have to wonder what Sil is going to wear later on, since the "Lord" apparently chooses the mage's clothes.

Yeah I caught that, thus the reason for the ridiculous "Akashic Record" outfit (her black original one was fine) because the Lord was a perv. So if she's still wearing that next episode, since her new Lord does whatever she tells him, I'm dropping this. There wasn't anything really interesting about it, the politics were dumb. Two warring sides finally make peace and signify it with a wedding that's disrupted by a demon who kills both leaders so they go back to war, huh? Go fight your common enemy, now if the demon had only killed one of them and pissed the other side off, that would have made sense. The fights were pretty lame too so they surrounded the guy and wound him and still have him outnumbered but run off screaming like girls anyway, wha? On second thought I'll probably drop this anyway, writing about it made me realize I won't be missing anything.

This first episode left me a little confused, but overall it was decent and I'm going to continue with it for now. The art style is gorgeous and I really like Siluca so hopefully the plot fills out a bit as time goes on.

( Also, am I the only one who got strong Fire Emblem vibes from this show...? )

I mean, you think they would have known better than to hold the wedding ceremony in the same room with the obviously evil pulsating demon summoning thingamajig. But I guess it did add a nice pop of colour to the room so there was that.

Exactly, hey anyone else worried about this evil aura gathering device on the alter? No? None of you mages who can sense evil auras notice anything either? OK then on with the wedding.

When I criticize A-1 Pictures, it's for the animation quality. A-1 really is the McDonald's of production studios, as another user here put it. No matter how good the writing or original character design is, if A-1 is involved, it's not going to look any better than 'meh' (... IMO, but I'm not the only one with this opinion).

This A-1 right? https://myanimelist.net/anime/producer/56/A-1_Pictures

Am I missing something? Most of their stuff looks fine, relatively speaking.

edit: what are you comparing A-1 to?

Can't turn it off. And I'm not asking for real world logic but that's how I spot good writing when an author creates a world that has it's own logic and sticks to it, it shouldn't be that difficult.

Fate / Extra – Last Encore = Shaft
Fate / Zero and Fate / Stay Night U.B.W. = Ufotable

So I'm a little spoiled. And, yes, there are some good-looking works in there (Saekano Season 1 and Oreshura), but those are the exception, not the rule. (I never have liked how the Fairy Tail anime looks compared to the manga, I think the Persona 4 anime looks a lot cheaper than it should, and Qualidea Code is kind of infamous for poor animation.) But the point is that I'm not shaming Grancrest War. I'm just wishing it had a studio with a better pedigree. Or, deep down, that it maybe looked like the Lodoss War OAVs, but that's definitely wishful thinking on my part.

I am not sure if it is a writing thing. It seems like the saturation of Japanese literature has given LN authors a pass to have w/e start to get to the meat of the story.

A lot of the material I consume nowadays feel this way. An example would be Isekai stuff.

Oh hey! You died/sucked in/summoned to another fantasy world and the isekai stuff just falls completely out after chapter one.
Yeah there is mentioned of "he is from another world that is why he has this power," but... is this bad writing" I do not know if you can make it any better (original).

Or like, cute girls doing cute things. Changing settings from hanging out in the club room to eating ramen does not make it any better nor does it deviate from set in stone story progression.

I actually shit on Lodoss War... I fell asleep twice watching it not for the animation but the story.

I was exposed to Grancrest manga before the anime was announced and did not bat an eye when A-1 was the studio since there was no difference in design.

The animation aspect never jumped out at me. The story did however and kinda boring. By the end of the anime I believe berating the story will be talked about rather than the animation studio.

But first episode put out the hate, I do not have a love this anime. Have at it!

No, no see I'm fine if they establish their own logic for that world (even if it's bad) as long as you do it upfront. My problem is like with this show just basically saying, we can't have any logic or else this story doesn't work. No there must be some logic. That's like giving a shitty writer a free pass and it always ends badly because it makes the writer lazy, "oh I don't have to make this work because this story has no logic". It can't end any other way.

Sorry for not taking time to read all the back and forth and potential bashing. I know this is only episode one and not going to be the favorite of a lot of people, but this is one I have really been looking forward to. And personally, I really enjoyed it. Sure it might not be perfect. But it's solid. You can say I'm wearing rose colored glasses, but I have faith it will at least be better than a lot of the try-hard stuff we have had recently.

Also I really enjoyed their voices as well. usually in these kinds of shows there is someone I just want to shut up and not speak again, but I enjoyed listening to this as a whole. I hope this ends up at least being a serviceable fantasy show.

Was curious about the VA for Theo after watching yesterday. He's rather new. Only has a few previous roles, most notable in BBK/BRNK. And this is his first MC role. Not very remarkable so far, but I'm routing for him.

As for the story, it was a collective conclusion of "just let it happen". Turned out a lot more fun that way. Then the "what do you plan on making me do" was a complete trigger statement for me. Haven't read the LN, but hope the story ends up with romantic underpinnings.
