Plot Summary

The protagonist opens his door to find himself face-to- face with a sadist...

"I've come to be made your pupil, like you promised!"

Kuzuryu Yaichi holds one of the highest titles in the shogi world, "Ryuo", at the age of 16. The girl who has shown up at his front door is Hinatsuru Ai, a nine-year- old in the third grade.

"Huh? Pupil? What?"
"Don't you remember?"

Though he doesn't remember her, the duo's life together thus begins. Eventually, Ai's honest enthusiasm helps Yaichi rediscover the passion he had begun to lose.

First episode is now up. Episodes air at 7am Pacific every Monday: http://www.crunchyroll.com/the-ryuos-work-is-never-done/episode-1-a-disciple-storms-in-758633

Episode 1

Rei better learn from Yaichi about what it means to be a Ryuo as he has a target on his head and a lot of pressure to live up to. One potential side-effect is that people will come after him wanting to learn shogi. That's what Ai is wanting to become his disciple, and she studied his strategy that she gives him a hard time while Yaichi has been in a slump for three months, but ultimately Ryuo wins. And then all hell breaks loose once fellow shogi player Ginko comes over for a match while Ai fresh out of the shower, and the pedo vibes skyrocket. After all that, his master wants Yaichi to take on Ai as his disciple until the end of spring. And in comes Ayumu who is a chuunibyou, while a Yaichi has attracted quite a lot of followers. Well, this show has potential if the show sticks to the shogi part, but if pedo vibes take over just like with that perceived pervert scene, then all bets are off. I'm hoping that it's the former that dominates, but I don't get that feeling.

Welp, I got what I had expected from the episode.

Cute characters, shogi, awkward moments, comedy, etc. It stayed true to its premise pretty well so far in terms of storytelling. I like Ginko so far with her cool personality and presence in the series. Ai is also quite a cute girl. Not a fan of that Yaichi guy though except for his shogi skills.

First episode pretty much sets up for more storytelling to come later. I expect more shogi matches and maybe even some characterization about the main characters.

This series won some awards and I heard good things about the light novel before so kinda curious to see where it goes from here...

Mmm. Already dislike the sister substitute and his lack of a spine. So this will be pretty typical.

Wasn't sure what to expect from this one going in, and I'm still not sure what to expect now that I've watched the first episode.

It could be fun and entertaining or it could be a total garbage fire. Ai is cute as heck but I don't know how much the show is really going to focus on her. The more they tell her story, the better. But if they keep focusing on the MC I just don't see it being interesting, especially given that they're already putting in place a potential harem for him (she's my sister BUT not really my sister!). Also, it has to be said, the loli. I'm really hoping that certain parts of this episode were just a blip on the radar or else we're going to have another Tenshi no 3P situation again.

We'll see where it goes but I'm not really optimistic about it.

Personally, I have to say the original LN is complete trash. Full of unfunny lolicon 'jokes' that go straight into paedophilia, as well as other unfunny scenes. The shogi is distinctly not the focus.

The anime though, so far seems to be avoiding everything bad about the source material and actually making a shogi series about playing the game. I would point out though, it's doing this by dropping entire chapters from the novel. Such as Yaichi and Ginko's Master taking a defeat very badly, or Ginko publically spreading rumours that would likely get Yaichi arrested. This show could be a decent watch, but there are just so many instances of sexualising girls whose age hasn't hit double figures to avoid.

I'm not really sure of what to think or expect of this show.

On one hand, it as an interesting set up with fairly unique characters. Ai's really cute (in a she-is-my-daughter-and-I-will-protect-her-with-my-life kind of way) and seems like she could be in for some decent character growth. All the other characters seem interesting as well (that chuunibyou dude was pretty funny I guess).

Now for the negatives (it should be pretty obvious as to what it's about but I'll put it in spoilers because I may or may not have some...strong opinions about this):

I've heard that the light novel was really well-received in Japan. I hope that it's because of the quality of the writing and not because a nine-year-old was one of the main characters.

Well that wasn't at all what I was expecting.

That was very fun, cute, and funny.

I'm not sure why people are already jumping to conclusions about it, but whatever.

I loved the chuuni scene and the back and forth between Ai and Ayumu.

Already liking this one.

The scariest thing about this series is the fact that I found myself staring at the girl's hair more than anything. Think I maybe developing a hair fetish lol

Not sure what to make of this show, as I did like the shogi and character parts, but vastly disliked the loli stuff.

Also, having seen March comes in like a Lion, it feels like they are trivialising Shogi by having vast amounts of young elite players - a couple of very young geniuses, sure, but an entire cast? And young bishoujo title winners too. Granted, I may be making big assumptions.

Having said that, maybe it's a good thing that it's trying to make Shogi more appealing to a younger (anime-targeted) demographic, if indeed it is going that way as opposed to the other concerns echoed in posts above me.

I guess we'll have to sit tight and hope for the best.
