It took me a lot longer than it should have to realise that she was a feral child rather than a robot...

Violet Evergarden... Whew, what a letdown. I can say I will most likely be rating this 6/10.Its very underwhelming and honestly having nearly finished it, the forced tragedies one after another just serves as an emotional disconnect from the story. It could of been a good story, but the author went way too heavy on the suffering. Halfway through I quit caring and found no joy in watching this. The stories that made me keep watching the series as Violet grew and became more aware of herself, her feelings, and slowly realizing she herself knew all along what happened to the Major and being forced to accept the cold hard truth that he was gone. The stories of her being an auto memories doll and how writing letters for them really helped shape who she was gonna become, was heartfelt and bittersweet. Except when the whole series is a series in itself of tragedies wore very thin and halfway through I became disconnected with the story. As I said earlier, the story gets to a point where the viewer no longer cares about the tragedies the characters feel because we get used to them, and now its just shock value. It seems more like a story that is trying to force an emotional response from the viewer. Its sad cause the visuals and music were great. 2 episodes left so I may as well finish it. At this point, I no longer feel vested into this world of Violet Evergarden, which is a damn shame.

Funny I didn't see it that way at all.
Not everything was a tragedy nor in my opinion was the drama forced. I will agree that watching Violet grow was best.

Yes they were trying hard to pull on your heart strings but that was what was waking violet up.

anyhow different people take different things from the shows they watch.

I enjoyed the anime.

I absolutely do not want another season though - I really hope they just leave the ending be. The Light Novel's ending was, in my opinion, simply terrible. Without going into spoilers, I feel a certain rather contrived revelation basically undermined the entire story's themes and Violet's growth up to that point.

It was a very nice complete series as it is.
But i think it was popular... so they may make more.

Reminds me I'd been meaning to look up spoilers for the loose story threads for a while. I'm already in retcon/headcanon territory with the anime so if I don't like any of the spoilers I'll just keep playing around with it. Thanks for the bump.

Honestly I thought the anime was fine. Not as great as I was expecting, but it was fine.

That being said my only complaint (other than the asinine end of the light novel series that I saw on the wikia)
about the show is how it jumps from Violet graduating from training school with a short and concise letter to
straight up whipping out romance poetry like she was B O R N to do it. Like you expect me to believe that she
was able to learn how to do that just from writing birthday invitations and apology letters?? I'd understand if it
there was a considerable timeskip in between the episodes but a heads up would be nice?

It just kinda ruined it for me for the rest of the anime but I never really disliked it.

Agreed, the anime ended in a pretty good place. It'll be a shame if they try to cash in by using more of the source material because we're almost inevitably left with the LN's godawful ending, which would bring an 8/10 anime down to a 4. I suppose I can just try to ignore its existence if they do go through with it.

Based on spoilers I'm equally ambivalent to both.

For me that means 6/10 each, but idk what 6/10 means to anyone else.

If this series does somehow get another season, they could easily just ignore the LN ending or do something to change it. A lot of this season was already anime original from what I've heard. They could just give us more separate stories of Violet writing letters and make up their own mini plot for several episodes. I can't speak for how the characters were written in the LN since I haven't read it, but animating that ending would be a huge slap in the face to multiple characters in the anime including Violet.

The special episode is now up on Netflix.

Pretty much, this is another one of those episodes where Violet is tasked with helping another client get her feelings across in a letter, except that Irma wants Violet to write a song, which is out of the scope of her job as a doll. But through observing her and visiting a place where letters go to die without ever making it to their intended recipient, Violet wrote it, and that song was a hit. While not as impactful as the ones in the OVA series, it was definitely nice to listen to that stunning soundtrack all while the artistic quality is top notch. It's great that Netflix got this and I look forward to the movie and Gaiden series in production.

Enjoyed this new episode, listed separate from the anime season as "Violet Evergarden Special" on Netflix.
