The setting feels very much like a cross between Gurren Lagann and Neon Genesis Evangelion. With blatant sex metaphors thrown into piloting the mechs for additional emphasis on the visual metaphors. I imagine the kaxxosaurs will also wind up being some big, bombastic representation of something or another.

I'm all for Trigger's big damn action, but I'm having a hard time really rooting for MC-kun yet. Too much Shinji Ikari for my tastes.

Well that was Trigger firing on all cylinders, pretty gutsy taking on a new Mecha series. They've set the bar so high it's going to take a lot to live up they're usual standards, though after misfiring on Kiznaiver maybe it's easier going back to their comfort zone.
As others have said not really a fan of the mecha design but don't hate them either. Zero2 better be interesting since she already shown the goods, kind of reminds of a Nono from Gunbuster 2 but with an attitude.

Just finished the 1st episode. The world building is a bit lax as well as the character backrounds. But its only the first episode so it can't be helped. The Mech design is a bit off-putting for me as well as the Kalxosaur(or w/e). Just feels like it was an after thought. That said I would be interested to learn a bit more. Is this another planet/universe or did something happen to Earth? Why are the male "pilots" always so beat up? Makes me think its a true parasitic relationship between pilots. How did one of those things breed with a human? Will give this a few more episodes to decide if its good or no.

Episode 1

Maaan, I reeally want to like this, but I can't for some reason.

I can't put into words what bothers me about it, but I just know something about it is off for me. Maybe because of how it's presented or that I don't know enough about everything to fully grasp what is going on?

The weird fan service moments took me out of the experience too. Again, not sure if all that I've said is what bothers me or if it's something else. Atsushi Nishigori is directing this and the character designs by Tanaka are appealing, so maybe that'll keep me around?

I love Trigger, but I guess I need more insight on where this show will go.

I for one like the klaxosaur design. It was like some hive mind nanite assembly tried to make a t-rex and failed, resulting in something awesome.

The show is like the guys at Trigger watched Pacific Rim and said 'hold my beer'.

Didn't realize this was a trigger anime until I looked it up. I noticed the A-1 logo in the credits so I assumed it was them even though all of the animation was so trigger-like. I do like the concepts at play here, though this was a show that certainly made me go wtf a few times thus far.

Ahhhhh after second rewatch, I get the partner design b/w the stamen and pistil naming now.

Also I guess I'll be in the minority of staying I like the design of the mechs, especially considering what those in the other camp like its pretty eyeroll, and I'll fight u to the death, so come.

Trigger looking good. They do seem to do better with the action-y material than drama.

Also, thank you so very much Trigger for designing mecha that get away from the Gundam/Macross clones. I'm not much of a mecha fan but if they put out a figure of Strelitzia I'll definitely buy it.

The mechs remind me of Star Driver which might not necessarily be a good thing. It does have a hint of Diebuster design as well. So far, I'm in as I enjoyed the animation and the characters haven't been underwhelming yet. I just hope it doesn't turn into another Star Driver, or an Aquarion. That said, the environment so far is very similar to Chrome Shelled Regios (though the monsters seen so far don't appear organic) which itself was an enjoyable show.

I wanted to not like this, but I kind of already knew I would.

While I feel the character deigns lack a lot of needed definition for the most part, I still like them overall. The backgrounds are very nicely done though. As too is the CG/Cell-shading. The animation is very smooth and the little bit of lighting effects we got to see here and there, especially during the battle, were very good as well.

I am really liking Zero Two. Something about her just flips those switches... aside from the fanservice that is. That was just a nice bonus.

I too like Cay quite like the mecha. I was already intrigued when we first saw they weren't all the same basic form factor in design. I liked how the main one we saw in action looked like a lion or a wolf, and then morphed into Iron Maiden mode. the Iron Maiden is badass. I like it when Mecha shows aren't afraid of pushing boundaries as to what robots should look like. Getting some good ole getter robo vibes for sure.

Leave it to A-1 to collab with Trigger and finally get them to make some decent mecha.

Add me to the list of people who like the mech designs. As someone who's seen all kinds of different mecha anime, believe me when I say I've seen some really ugly ones. These FranXX look neat. They look and move human-like, which is clearly the intent and it's rare to see such designs.
