For prior conversation in anticipation of the show, as well as early discussion shortly after it became available for viewing see /forumtopic-985185/devilman-crybaby-anticipation#55873761

I decided to give this a chance... Im so happy that i did. The animation fits perfectly with the themes of the show. Beyond the animation the story is regular fair but better then most. This could have easily been a weekly show and done very well.

But back to the art, its simply beautiful, the color choices, lines, style, it evokes something I haven't seen in a long time. Netflix made something incredible here, I've really been taken by there choices in style and substance. They really are not afraid to push the envelop and let the animators/directors go wild with what they want to do.

Anyone else seen Devilman Crybaby, what are your thoughts?

Netflix occasionally likes to slap "Netflix original series" on shows they're only licensed to stream, which is pretty confusing. The animation studio that's actually responsible for the show is Science Saru. I have yet to see the series, myself, though here's an interesting review by Gigguk;

I had zero to less than zero interest in the show myself, an insult to devil man. but that's what happens when Science Saru get's their paws on something. I wasn't expecting much and I knew I wouldn't be disappointed because I knew the other things the studio has rolled out. as mentioned it's not netflix original, it just means they paid the most and was able to obtain it to stream/dub. however that work it's doubtful they paid much for it.

I just finished the season of Devilman Crybaby on Netflix as well! As a newcomer to the series, I've only watched Cyborg 009 vs Devilman previously. The elaboration on Akira's origin and the origin of the Devilman was brilliant. I really enjoyed all of the detail and hyper chaotic storytelling style, including the musical interludes/side-narration by the rapping youth. My friend and I compared it to older opera style or that one form of greek storytelling.

As a mature show, they definitely threw my mind in several loops while keeping everything important to the central storyline and letting us assume what didn't need to be shown for the more minute details.

I agree the art was incredible! Definitely had to find a forum to talk about the entire show in more depth!
If I were to discuss further, I would divide analysis on each of the characters, what they represent, their development, the art, the side stories, and choices faced among each of them vs their backgrounds.
I'm really up to talk about any references to the original manga or other adaptations in comparison. I'm psyched to have watched!

It wasn't a bad show, but the pacing and characterization were both disastrous. Also, they should have never tried to do English dialogue. That destroyed a few very important scenes.

I think it nailed some of the action scenes, the rapping was quite good and just overall, the first episode was great. Beyond that, it doesn't have enough time to really nail any of the more complex things it wants to do so it turns into a bit of a mush which lacks the emotional heft to deliver on the ending leaving the whole things feeling impotent.

If you like the animation, check out Yuasa's other work. He's done much better shows elsewhere.

The music was stellar... I never watched the other show or read the manga but I want to now. Watching this with fresh eyes it felt crazy fast but I did enjoy the ride.

Symbolism was cranked up to 100 with damn near everything. And that music, synth, vapor, rap, deep bass, ambient it all just fit <3

Must preface this by saying I've never read any manga by Go Nagai. With that out of the way... I LOVED Devilman Crybaby.

The pacing was savage; the music (both synth and rap) did as much for the show's atmosphere as did the bold, flat color palette; and the mature themes were cranked to 11 without looking silly. It was fantastic and I really hope we get Devil Lady next, simply because I want more of this kind of thing in general.

I hadn't been planning to watch this, but I listened to the ANNCAST podcast about it recently and now I think I will. Probably won't be right away though -- I need to finish catching up and dropping other things for the season before deciding I've got enough time to resubscribe to Netflix for binges.

I was so disappointed in this show.
The immense disappointment and frustration from this series is what's going to make it wind up either my number 1 or number 2 worst animes of 2018 and it's put me off Yuasa for awhile, at least until I can hear his name and not be angry from being reminded of this show.

Pretty much exactly how I felt about the show. It started great and then just dropped off so bad.

Seriously left me like "Dafuq did I just watch..."
