Hey everyone!!

The nominees for the Anime Awards are LIVE and voting on group 1 has just begun!! We’ve seen a TON of great thoughts and opinions on the nominees, who should win, who deserves what, etc. and we want to share that with the world!!

Starting today, we’ll be collecting op-eds from anyone who wishes to share them in both video and essay form! Every day, starting tomorrow, we’ll collect op-eds from a particular category and share them in either a video or a feature article on the site. We can’t wait to look through your submissions to share!

If you’d like to submit an op-ed about the #AnimeAwards, please take a look at the following guidelines:

For both video and essay op-eds:
* Include the name you’d like to appear with your work (either real name or screen name is fine).
* Focus on a single nominee for a single category.
* No profanity or vulgar language.
* No disparaging comments about other titles (keep it POSITIVE ~).

For video op-eds:
* 15 seconds max
* Include video as a link to a Google Drive upload of your video file
* No background music
* We only want you!! We’ll add in anime footage ourselves :)

For essay op-eds:
* 200 words max
* Include text inline in the e-mail, with the image saved as a .png or .jpegattachment
* Include one image to pair with your essay, without any watermarks, subtitles, etc.

By sending your video or essay to us, it will considered a User Submission [link url="http://www.crunchyroll.com/tos
"]as outlined in the Crunchyroll Terms of Service, giving full use of the content and your likeness for the sake of these feature articles and videos!

If you’ve read all the above guidelines, you can submit your op-ed to “oped AT crunchyroll DOT com” with the following subject line: “Anime Awards Op-Ed: [Category Name] - [Show Name]”.

For example, if I wanted to talk about why I think Rakugo should be AOTY, I’d send an email with the subject line “Anime Awards Op-Ed: Anime of the Year - Rakugo Shinju”.

Any submission that does not meet all of the above guidelines is not likely to be read or watched.

Let me know if you have any questions, and we can't wait to start seeing your

Yeah quick question: Why did you decide to release the voting in bits and pieces instead of all at once? That makes absolutely no sense whatsoever.

I feel like the nominees this year make much more sense for the categories they were placed in, and I was happy to see capchas... I was not happy to see that it was possible to vote multiple times again, even without messing with IP addresses (I didn't even clear my history, and yet it couldn't remember I had already voted for best score. for the record, I only voted once for each)

I'd rather not see an "other" option next year, for fear of people giving something an award from a category it doesn't deserve (I still remember YoI getting best animation.) Perhaps next year we can have a nominating period where users can submit essays about which shows deserve a nomination, and leave it to judges to decide off of those?

EDIT: I want to state again, that It looks MUCH better this year, and so long as there are no odd hiccups, I'd be happy for this to become a recurring thing.

I wonder whether there's any chivalry in abstaining from voting in categories I haven't seen most of the shows in, since it's not like 99% of voters will do likewise.

For example, in the Action category, the only one of those shows I've seen so far is Attack on Titan 2, so I'm not planning to vote. (Meanwhile I've seen all of the Slice of Life nominees except Kemono Friends.) I've only seen two of the shows in the Villain category, so I'll abstain there too. For the OP category I pulled up and listened to the ones I hadn't heard. Haven't decided whether to vote on ED yet; I just finished Lion of March season 1 yesterday and didn't want to listen to the season 2 ED before hearing it in the show.

One would think that Your Name has Best Film on lock, simply by sheer volume of viewers, though I suppose Koe no Katachi will split them somewhat. It was nice just to be able to vote for Girls und Panzer der Film.

Voting's totally separate. This is just if you want your video or essay published about why you support a show for a category.

I think the nominees is quite good this year, i feel like i can accept whoever wins in their respective category.
There are some weird ones, like Chise in "Best Hero" even though she has more been a damsel in distress.
I feel maybe you shouldn't always prioritize the main characters either.

I mean like in 3-Gatsu no lion, how Rei is in Best Boy (probably because he's the MC, but i feel Nikaido, the teacher or almost every single other male character from that show would be better in that spot) and Hina not being in Best Girl while i think the few ones following the show would agree how great she is.

But overall it looks good.

Or well one other thing, i think it would be better to not have two nominees from the same show in the same category (Best girl/boy)
It would be better to see a different show get the "spotlight"

Other than that i think the wording/naming of some categorys feels weird/cringy.

-Anime of the year i would leave at it is.

-Best Continuing series i feel like is obsolete. It doesn't really matter if a series has a second season or not. I would be more happy with another more important category

-Best Boy/Best Girl i would like to see name changed to Best Male Character/Best Female CHaracter. It feels like Boy and Girl has to be someone younger age.

-Even though Best Hero/Best Villain sounds great, it should probably be renamed to Best Protagonist/Best Antagonist due to evil being in the eye of the beholder.

I don't think you should be able to vote on "Other", that makes this whole award show almost irrelevant.

Other Potential Categorys:
Best vehicle/robot
Best Non-human Creature
Best Weapon
Best Friend/friendship
Best Relationship
For the memes maybe even considering adding best Waifu/Husbando.

Also, maybe i'm just stupid but i don't see the reason for splitting up the voting.

Another idea would be maybe doing both a viewers pick and a judges pick for each winner.

Didn't realise before i read here either that you could revote by just refreshing the page, that seems quite stuid and easely abused by bots.
Maybe even going so far as to having to login to either crunchyroll or a separate page to vote.

I strongly disagree with a lot here.

I definitely don't see Chise as a damsel in distress. She's inexperienced and making mistakes, but she definitely has the qualities of a hero. She hasn't been waiting for or expecting Elias to come and save her. In many cases, Elias gives her trust and responsibility, then sometimes has to help if she gets herself in over her head. I do agree there may have been better choices to nominate, but I don't think it's weird to find her in this category.

I think Best Continuing Series is an important category. It's pretty difficult to get a continuation after the first season to begin with, but to have a series continue in or exceed the quality of storytelling from the previous season(s) is even more difficult and should definitely be celebrated.

Phrases like "Best Boy" and "Best Girl" are ingrained in anime culture. To change them to something more generic or Hollywood sounding would kill its meaning and alienate the community.

You could maybe have Best Protagonist and Best Antagonist as their own categories, but that can't replace Best Hero and Best Villain. The titles just don't line up. For example, characters like Light Yagami and Tanya Degurechaff are the protagonists of their stories, but they are definitely villains.

I will agree on the "Best Relationship" category idea though. Some characters are at their best because of a pairing with another character and its unfair to separate them or choose only one.

Well that's great actually. Discussion and different viewpoints is definately needed for improvements.
I understand that it's not easy to get these things right for the ones arranging it, and i do think they have done a great job this year.

I still stand by my thoughts but i understand your points and agree on many things you bring up.

One of the hard things is asking yourself if you want it to cater to the "meme side" of anime with wording like best girl/waifu or if it should sound more professional. I think that is an important first step, it feels weird to mix them and after choosing, the rest will be easier.

With my thoughts about the villain vs antagonist, i just feel that it's going to be easier to put right character in the right spot.

Primary example of people like Lelouch from Code Geass, you can argue for both villain and hero, but he's definately the protagonist of the show.

I realise that it makes the category to an entire different thing though, and i'm not sure if that's a good or bad idea.

And i think most series that gets a second season is being made with that in mind from the beginning.
There is some that's so popular so they gets it by that, but there is no way of separating one from another.
And in that case, should you include shows like one piece, thats on season 1 000 000?

Yes Lelouch is a good example. It's definitely easier to judge protag/antag vs. hero/villain. All the more reason to keep Hero/Villain awards and maybe add Protagonist/Antagonist. I just wouldn't want to see Protagonist/Antagonist as a replacement for Hero/Villain.

As long as shows are being judged critically instead of basing the awards on popularity, then I'm fine with shows in their second season completing with One Piece. The original Naruto was pretty popular, but there are plenty of story arcs in there that don't deserve any awards. A show that has run as long as One Piece has had every opportunity for the characters to get stale and the plots to turn into time wasting filler, so if they're still at the top of their game, then Bravo! (BTW, I don't watch One Piece, so I don't have an actual opinion there.) Also, if a newer show takes the award over a giant like One Piece, the David and Goliath story could be just what the newer show needs to gain popularity and keep going.
