Hi guys,

Before I begin, I would like to introduce the venture I’m apart of. A few months ago, two friends, who are also ex coworkers reached out to me looking to see if I was interested in getting involved in a venture. They wanted to combine their experience in finance, with someone in IT to get a Fintech product rolling. I agreed and we got the ball rolling. Our funding was estimated at about 10 million, but, for what we wanted to do required an insane amount of legal fees, and since we didn’t have something already innovative and investor friendly there was no way we could pull that in additional funding in a reasonable time. Essentially we were about to lose the project and our funding. Then I came up with an idea, but, it basically includes utilizing the production of a MMORPG.

I’ve been working on a game concept, inspired by No Mans Sky’s approach on procedural generation. But during that time the technology needed to run a persistent world MMO was just not capable unless you were a triple A company. However, the backend support is certainly possible now. I brought up my game concept, with a few other ideas. We ran some numbers and presented them, the investor figured we were on to something good here and is still on board.

I’m looking for input to help me solidify various gameplay elements. The graphic style is going to be stylized realism, think No Mans Sky, or Firewatch. It’s setting and art direction is inspired by my love of Cowboy bebop.

Currently, I’m trying to cement how space travel will take place, mainly, making sure you can both get away and also face a chance of falling victim to slavers. I am also looking to figure out how to occupy players during travel.

Player can utilize 2 Methods of travel:

Some points before I begin
- ships operate on <Tim Taylor Technology> as a form of power limiter and resource pool. IE, you will need to reduce power from one module to power another effectively. Some modules will require a baseline amount of energy to operate.
- The game takes place in a large galaxy, featuring millions of systems, entirely persistent
- Open PvP except in Armistice areas.
- Crew, and lone wolf based ship setups
- Always in first person
- You’ll use your onboard scanner to find and understand what’s around you
- You’ll know pirates when you see em.
- I’ll explain more later

Shift Drive, which operates in the “shift-space”, an alternate dimension which sits between now-space and time-space. Within the shift-space currents often form connecting systems like interstates, these currents are often unstable and have left many early shift space vessels stranded in space due it’s strange effects.

Pros:Further travel possible, fuel efficient uses very little fuel, only creates small radiation bubble upon exit, does not require power so shields can remain active.

Cons: Longer your distance the higher the chance of being “scattered”, thrown out of the current into the nearest connected system, a delay between use, typically leaves you within a few jumps of your destination, leaves sensory equipment disabled for an X amount of time, sometimes other systems, have to be discovered and within range to be used.

Jump Drive, signature based FTL travel, extremely taxing, requires significant energy often diverted from other systems.

Pros: More convenient for short trips and exit strategies

Cons: Not fuel efficient, noticeable radiation signatures generated on entrance and exit, has to be warmed up so it takes time to activate, requires large portions of energy and disables the shield.

Looking at it now it seems you are very vulnerable in both methods of travel, and there will be periods of cruise travel. I’m starting to like where this is going. How do you feel about this? Travel will be designed to take time, as well to expose players to dangers inherited in lawless space,

In terms of being occupied, Ships have certain modules inside of them with benefits or tasks. You will be able to decide the internal layout yourself.

Cook a meal for yourself, or crew - provides a buff for X amount of time to X skills, it’s effect and duration depends on the cuisine, quality of ingredients used and player effort during the task.

Visit your workstation, this could range from a supercomputer that’s crunching probe data for you, or a blood machine you’re using to cure a virus. Miners will have a machine that processes ore, providing a refinery bonus and If you’re a mechanic you will be able to work on your projects. The lounge room let’s you stream YouTube and twitch while benefitting from increased skill training speed as long as you’re in the room.

What are some other things you would like to participate in, or find interesting during space travel? I look forward to hearing the input.

Thanks guys.

I would like to see some type of gathering or info collecting. Like collecting space plants, hunting species and stuff (assuming it's not gonna be boring empty planets)
In MMO's I generally like to have stuff I can do besides the story. For example Black Desert Online, there's tons of stuff you can do like fishing, hunting, processing, alchemy, training...
I think there's alot variety in stuff that could be done in space environment.

Personally I would like if you could choose to put the game in third person view. Personally I don't like 24/7 first person view especially in MMO's. I like to see my character.

And I also think there should be lvl that starts the open PvP or have it in certain places of the galaxy, otherwise it would be unfair for people who are just starting.

Hi, Jakachu

I appreciate the feedback.

Most planets will be lifeless, and their biomes will range depending on the type of planet it is. If its close to the sun, it will be a lava/heat based, if its far away it will be a frozen landscape.
Planets will be intended to be used mainly for gathering operations, and for personal housing. I.E, you can build a base on a planet in an uncharted system that no one will know about meaning you can use it for your hideaway. Doctors, for example, - Perform "studies" on planets, to gathering ingredients to produce remedies, cures, vaccinations and supplements. Players who are apart of disciplines which do not involve planetary interaction, such as combat oriented players, will often find themselves visiting planets to respond to abandoned facility and crashed ship distress beacons (which are randomly generated).Typically, when players initiate some form of a trigger on a planet, such as a Miner initiating an excavation, or a doctor initiating a study to collect samples, the AI will begin to throw hazards your way and they will become more intense the closer you get to your harvesting location.

Moving forward, the game actually won't possess a "linear", or a typical story line. It is an open ended, sandbox style game and does not need progression via quests. Instead, we are implementing a robust selection of gameplay mechanics to allow players to shape their footprints into the game and to leave their own legacies.

Also, the game won't actually have levels, similiar to Eve online, your skills train over time and your effectiveness is based on how you are molding your character. Starting out, there will be a policed safe zone area, where playrs are unable to engage in combat, however, everything from there is up to you to stay alive. The game will feature millions of systems, so its unlikely you will find it difficult to get away from players.

I would quite like to see some sort of guild system. It would be good if it had both PvP aspects as well as granting perks.
In term's of PvP I'd like to have wars between guilds maybe over claiming certain regions of the universe, being able to form alliances between guilds would be cool to have giant space battles occur.
In terms of perks I think having a mix of passive and active perks would be best.
Passive perks could be something like increasing travel speed by x% or using x% less fuel.
Active perks could be either basic buffs or have some ultimate long cool down effect, like an EMP reducing enemy shields for a few seconds.

Another thing I personally would like is having afk activities and control similar to Black Desert being able to set a way point and automatically following that way point or performing most life skills.
With active controls I personally prefer being able to have complete piloting capabilities with the keyboard. So not targeting a ship and orbiting and shooting a ship automatically.
