It's way better than skype(it's not on when you want it off ) and teamspeak(if you know what that is). And it's not complex at all. Real time chat, voice chats, and fun bot commands everyone can use. And as far as I know you can be in up to 100 servers, that includes bot support servers.

100 as in you can be in 100 servers. There is no cap to amount of people.

Really it depends on the server. And the bots essentially can run commands log messages, when a user joins, welcome a user, and all sorts of things.

*I use to moderate a server with 14k users and its quite chaotic can't say I'm a huge fan of it.

Discord is a vid, voice and text chat and forum service you can use to communicate with friends, family - people in general.
You can also join communities/ groups/clubs on it. They're generally called "servers" but it's the same as a club/group - and you can voice/text chat in those if you want to ,and you can make your own group in it, and set up bots etc to help you run it. Oh and you can always change your Discord Name whenever you want to.
They also give you premium features if you pay them, - such as changing your code/tag (that comes at the end of your user name as a # with 4 numbers to it) and you can advertise your group id you're looking to get more followers etc to join - (though most people join groups that do "partnering" - which is a channel/section in the group you joined, where they advertise your server/group, so people can see it and join it. It's just cheaper to do I guess lol.)

Most gamers and artists use it cuz you can live stream with it, and share your screens with people who want to watch what you're doing on your computer screen in real time. Vid Quality though is not that perfect, but it's workable. They do cut you off, if you leave the vid feed on for more than 10 hours though, but most of this service and what you can do on it is free.

And no it's not complex to use. There are How Too's on Youtube that should you the basic layouts and settings of Discord - you can go look at some if you'd like.

EDIT: How will you know who's speaking in a group voice chat - since you asked that - They're avatar, which is usually displayed on the screen infront of you, will light up when they speak.
And yeah, you can only be in 100 servers.
Also, people can DM you, if you're in a server or you have your message settings set to "open for everybody."

In servers you can give yourself a nickname in there if you want.
In chat, people may use the @ to ping someone if they're afk or something. Each server has their own rules and punishments, and bot commands and role setup channels, so when you join a server, I would recommend you read through/go through those first.
