The problem is that I am not the best in social situations, even on the internet. When tons of people post at the same time, I usually do not feel like I should join the conversation. It also becomes difficult to follow after a while.

That's often what the overflow channels are for, occasionally you'll find servers with them made specifically to mitigate the problem of overcrowding in a particular room and if you want to be more one on one with someone just give em a chime and pick their brain a little.

Of course you can also set up group chats (of 10 people max I believe) which will stay open like a regular private message that only you and your friends can chat in, if that's more to your liking.

I suffer from the same issues, so I'm not quite sure what to tell you...

Why not though? You can try keeping up with the conversation by popping up and asking what's going on or what's being discussed.

I do not mind it all of the time, but I am also not a great fan of conversing in such a manner. There are three things that happen in such a situation: 1) nobody notices/replies to my message, 2) people reply, but quickly move on to another topic, 3) people reply an, but I am not sure how to keep the conversation going because directing questions towards a group of people feels odd and impersonal.

Because it's fun. Though servers tend to be pretty dead from my experience at least.

I tried it like a year back after being "invited" to a couple of servers and quickly lost interest in it. I've always had a bad experience with trying to make friends/conversation as well so meh, I don't know what to tell you there. I guess it's fun if you like messing around with the bots that have those profile customization/level up systems.

Maybe get a couple of your friends from CR and make a server on there and then start advertising it when you feel comfortable. If you just want to interact with the community, then you should join at least a couple of the ones on here because most people have moved on to that. If you don't want to join a server, then don't. It's your choice.

As an introvert I feel discord helps me deal with my problems with talking to people at my leisure. It doesn't feel like a forced conversation and if at any time I get bored I simply leave the chat without having to say anything more. Tis a good place to observe the habits and mindsets of complete strangers whom you never have to bother meeting in real life.
