For me, my favorite is the Mass Effect trilogy. Throughout the series, I gained around 19 squadmates...

I just enjoyed the on-screen chemistry between Commander Shepard and his/her numerous teammates, especially four of my favorites, including Urdnot Wrex, Garrus Vakarian, Tali'Zorah vas Normandy, and Liara T'Soni. In a way, I almost wish that Commander Shepard and those four aforementioned squadmates got their own five-piece combining mecha, so that they could fight giant monsters together, whether it's a thresher maw or even an entire Reaper.

Which AI-controlled teammates are your favorites, and why?

I honestly can't remember a single game where I was happy with the AI.

Interesting that you mention the Mass Effect triology.
ME2 is still one of the games that make me rage at how silly the NPC allies act if you don't continuously give them commands.
As characters they're very well done but the AI was terrible.

Offhand I can't remember a game where I was actually happy with the AI of allied units.
There's a bunch with decent hostile AI though.

Now, speaking of good NPCs from a character aspect Planescape: Torment will always be a favorite.

Any game you want to pick between, not just the Mass Effect trilogy alone.

AI I would say Dragon Age series.
In the first I could spend a hour tailor making my core groups tactics and they would follow them perfectly.
In Inquisition they worked fine as long as I didnt let any of them Shield Dash
In Da2 I had to micro manage a little. ME2 I didn't remeber and bad Ai as I was too busy paying attention to myself but I do remember Kasumi always doing well with her Shadow Strike. Last in Andromeda the AI was fine after a few patches and never had a issue,
ME1 was too long ago and I have no complains for ME3.
Not many games have AI worth mentiong as far as companions go as you tend to micro manage or do everything for them.
Tales of Zestria was fine AI wise..

If you are looking for good AI, definitely don't look in the direction of the Persona series. Great game, terrible AI

Here's some really good AI teammates imo :

Pawns from Dragon's Dogma (annoying sometimes though)

Quiet from MGSV

Delta Squad from Star Wars Republic Commando

Almost every companion from Naughty Dog games (Uncharted series, The Last of Us)

I'd say the God Eater series depending on how you spec your teammates out.

Are you saying that Mitsuru spamming Marin Karin at the worst possible times is a bad idea?

On topic, Final Fantasy XII's gambit system - much like Dragon Age's tactics system - allows the AI to actually contribute well to battles. You could spend hours setting up the perfect gambits for superbosses.

fire emblem heroes. just love it when you turn on auto battle and your units who have ally movement abilities just sit around pushing each other into a corner

FFXII. But that depends on gambits.
