It seems that, everywhere I go, the majority of anime protagonists are backed up by a small group of friends assisting them on their journey. Goku, Naruto Uzumaki, Ichigo Kurosaki, Monkey D. Luffy, Shiroe (my favorite out of all the others, BTW), Gon Freecs, Taichi Yagami and his numerous successors in later Digimon series, Spike Spiegel, etc. It seems like, every time we get an anime protagonist, they're almost always in groups.

So does anyone know any anime protagonists who work at their best solo, rather than in groups like the aforementioned anime protagonists? Thanks.

I would say Gin from Mushi-Shi. Although, there are a few support minor characters how are reoccurring through the series, but for the most part Gin works alone.

Trigun - Vash Stampede. For the first half of the series the side characters are only ever an inadvertent help and more often a hindrance.

Vampire Hunter D.

Lelouch from Code Geass maybe? Been a long time since I watched it, but I only remember CC being with him but everyone Lelouch used as pawns.

He definitely thought of Karen as more than just a pawn¬¬

Light Yagami from Death Note had a supporting cast around him, but they weren't really nakama. "L" as well.

Tanya Degurchaff had help at times, not really friends.

The guy from Erased was on his own.

EDIT: I think the original Black Jack had a little kid that followed but that didn't do much (I never really got into the series).

It would seem to me just about all anime tries to give the MC supporters atleast to some extent. Not necessarily a roving group. But solo MCs would be kinda boring don't you think? I mean other then non stop action there wouldn't be any dialogue. Now if your just looking for an MC who doesnt travel in packs... thats a different story.
Ginko from Mushi-shi is certainly without support 90% of the time.
You could also say Subaru from Re:Zero does atleast half of everything on his own, though at times he relies on others
. ACCA-13s MC is for the most part solo except for some dialogue with others.
Blood-C MC is by herself for 80% of the show
God Eater the MC is usually only with 1-2 others not necessarily the same people either
Parasyte the Maxim if you dont count his right hand he is pretty much solo 90% of the show other then some dialogue

So really its to what extent your accepting "friends assisting" As I said before a 100% solo MC show would be pretty darn dull and lifeless.

I can't seem to edit my earlier post atm, but Kaiji and Akagi star basically lone wolves.

The Medicine Seller from "Mononoke" (who also had a spot in "Ayakashi: Samurai Horror Tales").

He travels on his own, and the various people he'd encounter were for the benefit of the mystery showcased within a 1-3 episode format.
