You remember how I talked about the idea of Shinji, Asuka, and Rei's EVA units combining, only for you guys to say that it wouldn't fit with Evangelion at all because it dealt with isolation and loneliness? And you know how, every time in a real robot anime, mecha teams divide themselves into different weapon and equipment specializations, e.g. melee, ranged, heavy weapons, flight, etc.?

Say that Shinji, Asuka, Rei, and their respective EVA units specialized in certain weapons and equipment, rather than all three of their EVA's fighting similarly to each other. What would they be, and why?

In my case, it's one of two variations:

1. Shinji = Well-rounded.

2. Rei = Ranged sniper support.

3. Asuka = Melee.

Either that, or:

1. Shinji = Melee.

2. Rei = Again, ranged sniper support.

3. Asuka = Heavy weapons.

Again, this wouldn't work with the setting. The political environment never meant for multiple EVAs in the same location.

Whatever SEELE and Gendo had planned, the UN members wanted to maintain a balance of protection around the globe. Designing the EVAs to have specialisms would have tipped off the UN that it was intended to gather them in one place.

Also the series shows the development costs of standardised units were astronomical; they would never be able to complete the EVA series in time if they all went in different directions.

-----

However, in the spirit of a what-if thread:

The Heavy Weapons idea would be a non-starter. The only things that could penetrate an AT field in the series were another AT field, a high energy beam weapon or the lance. Conventional Heavy Weapons would bounce off an Angel like ping pong balls.

The sniper specialism may have been an option if they had the foresight to predict they would steal the positron rifle. The story justification could be that it was predicted in the Dead Sea Scrolls.

Another certainty for me is that Gendo would never risk Rei as a close-combat specialist. The risks of an Angel merging with her were too great.

In terms of temperament, I could see Asuka embracing a specialism. "You may have a high synchronisation ratio, THIRD CHILD, but that is nothing compared to me being a *****"

Asuka being the best at something may have reinforced her ego and stopped or delayed the eventual breakdown.

And then we said that only poseurs or really, really old anime fans who haven't watched anything else still TALK about Evangelion since the 90's?
And how you can always spot a Total Noob by the way he thinks every single anime discussion has to have "Shinji" in the title, the way other fans think it has to have "Sword Art Online" in it?

...Yep, same ol' thing. Think you pretty well nailed it with "Another Evangelion thread."
