What are some of the anime that you've seen over the years that you really enjoyed, but will likely never get an English dub?

Feel free to add some reasons why you liked it, as well as why it will likely never get a dub.

I'll start.

-Chihayafuru.
Beautiful story and music and you'll fall in love with the characters. I had never heard of Karuta before or anywhere else. But I've fallen in love with it as well as the characters. A nice "sports" anime with a lot of romantic tones to it.
I'd say the main reason it will never get a dub is that the beauty of the poetry would be mostly lost if they tried to do an English dub. They'd either have to find a way to make the person reading the poems in English sound as good as the Japanese (no chance) or they'd have to keep the poems in the original Japanese but dub the other parts. Would be odd, and it likely wouldn't work.

Edit: A few of you have already pointed out that Chihayafuru, much to my surprise, actually has a dub. I plan on checking it out. But still. Enjoy and continue the conversation.

Almost all of them. Dubs are not cheap to produce, so, if you are a distributor, you want to save your money for sure bets (e.g. Dragonball).

That has a dub, no idea if it was any good though, I'm not a fan of the Sentai in-house stuff.

Sometimes I wonder what a Nichijou dub would sound like if it were given an all-star Hollywood cast.
I also always imagined Sakamoto would sound like Salem from Sabrina the Teenage Witch. *shot*

At this point tho the show is like 7 years old now and evidently wasn’t very successful, at least not until some time after it’s initial airing. Heck, it’s hard enough to find the sub of this show legally, I can’t imagine it’ll ever get a dub.

Gintama

It just wouldn't work. Gintama's humor revolves around Japanese puns and Japanese pop culture references.

Yeah, Chihayafuru got a dub, and I'm very surprised that it did. Had it been licensed when it first came out, it would have unquestionably been released without one as the show is all sorts of difficult to dub, all while the show just doesn't have that widespread appeal factor that was the main criteria back then. The only way to dub it is to have all of the game mechanics and everything related to karuta stay in Japanese.

Anyway, one show that fits this like a hand in glove is Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinju. That show is just about impossible to dub, and even getting it right in Japanese took everything out of the seiyuus as it takes a lot of skill to do rakugo right. Simply put, it just doesn't translate well into other languages, so I can't see that show being dubbed. Nevertheless, the story is all sorts of amazing and while the first season had some issues, the second season was absolute perfection.

Funimation didn't dub Gintama. CR dubbed it via outsourcing it to Ocean, all Funi is doing is distributing it. CR will probably outsource the rest of the series to Ocean and let Funi do the rest.

The Tatami Galaxy
Great show, funny and a little offbeat. I don't see a dub working, as the lead character speaks extremely fast. I found myself pausing just to read subtitles whenever he'd start talking. I don't think they could go fast enough with English to make a dub synch and look good.

Ping Pong the Animation
Coincidentally another Masaaki Yuasa show. Not coincidentally, another great one (Masaaki Yuasa comes pretty close to genius IMO). Funimation did a dub, but I haven't watched it. Dialog is a little fast at tines (not as fast as Tatami Galaxy), but the combination of Japanese, Mandarin and the occasional English phrase in the original adds some nuance that would be missing if it were all in English.

Ping Pong is also dubbed as well. On the other hand, Tatami Galaxy is not. Everybody who speaks Chinese in Ping Pong also does so in the dub, so that aspect is kept.

Macross. Although there is some hope for the series being released in the West in a few years if Tatsunoko Publishing does the smart thing and refuses the inevitable offer from Harmony Gold to renew their license for the franchise. Which I am banking on the hope that Tatsunoko holds a grudge against HG for all the legal bullshit they've pulled, since the license expiry in question resulted from a dispute between the two in US federal court (and is effective March of 2021, just in time for my 30th birthday), and that the success of Frontier and Delta has brought in huge amounts of money for Kawamori and Studio Satelight and all but proven an existing market for the franchise in the west that has up until now remained unexploitable thanks to a certain greedy asshole of a copyright troll with ties to the mafia and a complete disregard for the sanctity of a brilliant sci-fi universe.

If the planets align after that we may see the possibility of an official release of Macross in the US and Europe, but I seriously doubt it will be dubbed. At the very least the songs will remain in Japanese which is a good portion of the show - there's something about the works of Minmay, Fire Bomber, Sheryl Nome, Ranka Lee, and Walkure that just doesn't translate.

Since I got some traffic I'll the other show I really like that will likely never get a dub.

Cross Game
-From looking at a preview summery or at the genres Cross Game looks like your run of the mill baseball sports anime. This misses the mark. I see Cross Game as a romance anime with the setting being baseball. Where other romance anime might have some sort of hook, like being set around music or some sort of crazy club, Cross Game is set to baseball. It is tragic (only for the first couple episodes), sweet, and pretty human. What I mean by being pretty human is that our characters aren't like a lot of the tropes you find in other anime. Another thing that makes Cross Game special is that it treats it's audience as like intelligent people who can make deductions and see things for themselves. A lot of other shows just blast you with things. Making sure that you understand the situation even if you weren't paying attention at all.
Please check it out.

I'd say the reason it will likely never get a dubb is 1: It's getting on in age (2009). 2: A sports anime, and not a supper popular one at that. 3: The art style is more laid back than other flashier shows/ It doesn't have a high production value.

Didn't know that. I'll have to check that out a bit. Wonder how they did with the poems? From the preview clip on the page that you linked I think the same person that did Shiro from Log Horizon is doing Arata (it fits). Chihaya's is ok (could be better). But I don't like Taichi's English voice. He sounds a bit too deep/ gruff for Taichi. Taichi is supposed to be a pretty boy, good at everything, and popular. I just don't feel that at all from his voice/
