So I looked up Go Lion and Dairugger XV, and how they were eventually used to create the two different versions of Voltron. And I found out that, in their original Japanese format, they weren't as popular in Japan as the two Voltrons were in the West.

So why weren't Go Lion and Dairugger XV that popular in Japan compared to, say, Dancouga or Six God Combination Godmars?

Because unlike in America they had competition from other giant robot shows.

Dairugger XV

Oh thanks, I knew I saw a Voltron made out of cars once but didn't know its name.

But yeah competition. And the design concept seems a little boring when it's not the only game around: all lions or all cars/trucks compared to different shape and purpose machines.
