Synopsis

A desolate land stretches out from the city of poverty. A motorcycle speeds recklessly, blowing clouds of sand and dust. The rider is the protagonist of this story – he has neither a name nor a past.

All he has is his ring name, “Junk Dog” and a technique for rigging MEGALOBOX matches with his pal Gansaku Nanbu, which they use to support their hand-to-mouth lives. Although he has the skill, he isn’t dissatisfied enough to change his ways- but he’s not satisfied with his life either. JD is bored, resigned, and unfulfilled. He lives with frustration in a life of shadows beneath the lights of fame.

Meanwhile, under the bright sun is Yukiko Shirato, the daughter of Shirato Konzern —the reigning family of the wealthy class. Yukiko decides to advance her career by using MEGALOBOX to organize a large fighting event, MEGALONIA: the tournament to determine the champion of MEGALOBOX. She creates a scenario: MEGALOBOXER Yuri, under her control, will win and become the champion to further promote the Shirato brand gear and expand business. Yuri has been the reigning champion of MEGALOBOX for the past few years. Driven by self-discipline and his strong will to practice, he has the skills and presence of a true champion. The man himself is a shining exemplar of virtuosity.

This is a story of JD and his rival, Yuri. An encounter between shadow and light; a fast-paced story begins when their paths cross.

First episode is up.

Episode 1

The first episode pretty much introduces Megalo Box which is the future of boxing and with that a tournament is being held called Megalonia. We are than introduced to our MC who goes by his boxer name Junk Dog who gets paid to throw fights. He wants to get serious in fights but can't since he doesn't have a citizen id, so winning would be pointless. After throwing another match he happens to almost hit Yukiko Shirato the one hosting the Megalonia tournament. She reminds me of Killing Bites Yōko Mitsukado minus the whole bitchness. Than we are introduced to Yuri the champ of Megalo Box and we almost got a fight between him and Junk Dog. However its put on hold because Yuri decides to be Junk Dog's next opponent and beat his ass for the way he treated Yukiko. Not a bad start we get introduced to some of the characters and we can expect a nice fight next week.

Episode 1

I have never watched any of the Ashita no Joe series, but seeing boxing combined with technology, that's a pretty cool concept. Anyway, knowing about Joe's character a bit in the original series, it's fitting that a street rat like JD would dream big in becoming a champion in Megalo boxing. It sure doesn't take long for JD to show why he's a force to be reckoned with, but the only thing stopping him was the fact that he's throwing fights to cash in rather than to try and rise to the top. Of course, he could do that by entering Megalonia, but that's only open to citizens, which he is not. And then a chance encounter with the champ has him fighting him in the underground arena. That was pretty slow, but the intensity certainly was there, so I'll see what comes of this.

Wow, this was an intense start. It didn't waste much time to get to the point and I like the momentum.

The main character is Junk Dog and I like his tough personality so far. The show makes me want to learn more about him beyond just being a fighter. On technical terms, I like the animation quality for its roughness. The music is intense and has a nice style to match with the fighting.

I guess there's going to be a lot of fighting and rivalries made in the ring. It's definitely an intriguing show so far imo.

I'm not familiar with Ashita no Joe except in the broadest outline, let's face it, who hasn't seen the ending parodied dozens of times, but I know it's considered a classic. So this has a distinguished pedigree to live up to. Well, I really like what I'm seeing so far. Quite literally; I love the way the show looks. Also, the characters seem like they are going to have a little more depth than usual and the setting has potential for intrigue and drama. Unless something goes horribly wrong I think we have a winner.

Man, I haven't seen an opening episode this sexy for a long time. The theme is hard to describe....is it technoganster? Robothug? Whatever you want to call it, there's a lot of style packed into this one. One thing I instantly enjoyed was the old school art and animation that feels so right in this rise to the top setting. Lots of great art along with a unique perspective make the towns and cities contrast with the old vs new world plot line. In particular I love the wild west meets thug life feel. The soundtrack is pretty awesome too.

In just one episode they explained the setting entirely, leaving out just enough to keep things interesting.. There's still the mystery of the MC's backstory and how the ctiy came to require citizenship licenses which implies some kind of political drama behind the scenes. There a lot of corruption going on, so there's plenty of room for villains of all kinds.

As for the bad, I think they might have come out too strong and may fizzle a bit after this cliffhanger event. Pacing will be an important part of this show and while they're doing great so far, I get the feeling it will somehow end up like Hajime no Ippo where the intensity wears off quickly. The cast worries me a bit, but we're only ankle deep in these waters so far.

I think we have a strong contender for anime of the season in this one. The pacing has such a great flow, it does a great job of showing how he just jumps into the ring for cash and returns to his normal life as part of his routine.

Phenomenal first episode, absolutely no complaints.

Great art, animation, and soundtrack, interesting story and characters, a potential AotS for me and that's crazy considering we have Steins;Gate 0 and Boku no Hero Season 3

Damn... just damn. I had a feeling this would be interesting, but it really blew away my expectations.

This almost feels like one of those "They don't make anime like this anymore" moments.

Episode 1

Hell yeah!

This show takes me back to the times in high school when I used to box. I can tell this'll be hot-blooded and very interesting like Ashita no Joe was.

Also, I'm digging the aesthetic going on here since it'll be fun to see how it blends with some action animation!

I liked the episode, but after seeing all this praise maybe I put my expectations a little too high. Regardless looking forward to the fight next week.

A million times this.

And then some.

VA is awesome. Digging the style, the music, and the appropriate absences of background music – quite impactful. Love that it's not catering to kiddies.

Exciting start.
