For prior conversation in anticipation of the show, see /forumtopic-963227/saredo-tsumibito-wa-ryuu-to-odoru-dances-with-the-dragon-anticipation

Synopsis

The series takes place in an alternate world, staged mostly in the city of Eridana, whose territory is half in the Tseberun Dragon Empire, and half in the Lapetodes Seven Cities Alliance. Each half is separated by the Orielal River. In this world, special abilities called spell formulas (咒式, jushiki) exist, which are essentially chemical reactions augmented through special weapons that cause a magic spell-like effect. These special weapons are called Magic Staff weapons, and are as varied as regular weapons are. Spell formulists use these spell formulas to fight with "Beasts of Abhorrent Form," natural creatures that use spell formulas and pose a threat to humans, such as Dragons, Aions, or Enormes.
The story focuses on the two main characters, Gaius Sorel and Gigina Ashley-Bufh, the only two employees of Spell Formulist dispatch office Ashley-Bufh & Sorel Co. They are met with a variety of requests from a variety of clients, all requiring the adept use of spell formulas.

For the first time in a long while, both TBS shows are airing on the same day in Japan. And it begins with Fripside doing a slow-paced song, which is unusual.

Episode 1

Gayus and Gigina make quite an interesting duo, and they kind of remind me of the main duo in Tiger and Bunny with one of them having problems with his performance, and the other more serious about the job and doesn't take failure well. So it begins with a hunter on the loose looking to take down the main duo, while those two have a case. While there's a lot I don't get so far, it looks like it will be interesting to see how things turn out.

I'm not going to lie, this was a confusing and strange start. Felt like too much happened at once including the characters' introduction.

The main guys (Gayus and Gigina) are strange....hopefully the show will show more about their past or make me care about them. The action feels underwhelming and story isn't appealing to me at the moment.

I hope it will be good but the first episode felt messy.

Episode 1

The first episode we are introduced to Gayus and Gigina a strange pair who hunt dragons. In the first episode they fight a black dragon that is called a semi Altar and they both had a rough time before killing it. The semi Altar is nothing to a real one so if they two ever face a real Altar, Gayus is sure they would die. This episode we are also introduced to a friend of theirs who's a reporter looking and is trying to find a big scope on someone killing hunters. After killing the semi Alter Gayus and Gingina have become famous that they should be getting more work but this only attracts the attention of the killer who is going after them next. I found the first episode really boring that even the action scenes wasn't enough to keep me entertain. Thats really troubling with it being the first episode and this could lead to me dropping this series.

Wow, that was a really boring start. Goes to show slapping goofy names and slipping in one exposition dump after another does not an interesting story make. Even the opening fight with the dragons lacked any real weight with the protagonists banter constantly going on and horribly generic Final Fantasy-esque spell effects going off. Even the gun sword just wound up being unintentionally funny. And seriously, why were they getting chewed out for bringing down some supposedly bad-ass dragon? Despite the constant flow of info dumps, the world felt neither lived in nor well told.

The only part I really enjoyed was how horrific the elf-girlfriend's cooking looked, that was legitimately funny. But hey, one of the generic hot guys has a girlfriend and actually seems to appreciate her assets, that's something at least. Sadly, that's not nearly enough to keep this from feeling like a generic waste of time.

I think thread title should be changed to its English title.

So our protagonists are dragon-hunters who wield impractically large gun-blades that are also magic wands. One's a casual racist, and the other one's a dragon- err, Draken.

They kill a big bad Draken dragon (that isn't a real big bad dragon), which, despite people being impressed, is apparently a bad thing?

The Draken is a frivolous spender, and I guess collects furniture or something? The protagonist also accuses him of being a god-worshiper, to which Draken counters saying his race doesn't pray to gods, unlike protagonist's race, which does. Which makes it seem odd that protagonist worded it like an insult...

Our heroes(?) are also being advertised due to their Draken dragon slaying, despite their employer being upset about it... This catches the eyes of a Cardinal who's doing... something or another. Oh right, there's some political stuff or whatever, too.

Protagonist has a lovely dinner with his elf girlfriend, and they get it on afterwards. I can't help but feel like there were some vaguely sexual assault vibes near the end of that scene... though it could have just been the way the seiyuu read some of the lines.

There's also a serial killer on the loose, who I presume is a Draken dragon lady, and she's out for revenge against our heroes. Which would be scary, except all her kills are cases of mistaken identity, which kind of just makes her seem like an airhead.

So that was the first episode of Dunces with the Drakens. I not sure how I'm supposed to feel about protagonist; something about him just feels... I don't know, odd. I guess we'll see what happens next week?

As others have said, there definitely was A LOT going on in that first episode, and it definitely wasn't the best looking show I've ever seen.. but I actually kind of enjoyed it. I'm curious to see where it goes and just how many of it's million plot threads it actually follows. Definitely content to give this one another couple of episodes at least.

I think they should have tried to make us care about Gigi and Guy more before setting up a serial killer who is after their sweet, sweet bloodgems. Or shown more of Guy's big top headliner, and less of her cooking.

So what we get from this first episode is that dragons are like cockroaches, and Gigi and Guy go out to spray pesticides. Guy is a drop-out from The Ultimate Jutsu Academy, and his wife Gigi spends all their money but doesn't actually believe in using anything. Guy has a sideline that can't cook, and is unknowingly being hunted by a hot chick.
The Church plans to sacrifice Guy and Gigi to fix their problems, or at least paper over them.

Spending a good 5-6 minutes trying to understand the first 38 seconds of a series just isn't an impressive start. Once I wrapped my mind around that, the rest wasn't so confusing. But at the same time, kept asking myself "Just why?"

Bonus: Turns out it's Hosoya Thursday!

Hmm. I recall reading in CR News that this is not the easiest source to adapt, and fans of it are surprised that it got picked up for animation in the first place. Perhaps the anime is trying to Do Too Much while also trying to shy away from the stuff it cannot show?
