Not hard to see why this got hyped. If this first episode is an accurate reflection of the manga then I'm going to have to read it at some stage. I'm personally a sucker for shows that delve into topics I know nothing about, and Golden Kamuy's setting is exactly that. Mix in some action that draws on for just long enough to be compelling and... yeah. I like this. As already touched on, the CGI so far has been less than stellar (and frankly I'm not expecting a rise in quality there), but it's still watchable. If this is the only complaint I'll have for this show when it's wrapped up, I'll be more than happy.

Really, there's not a lot to say; it's just a great first episode in my opinion. This is the first new series I've seen this season that has convinced me it'll be good from day 1.

Definitely read the manga if you like learning about new stuff. You will learn more than you ever imagined about Ainu culture, Hokkaido flora and fauna, early 20th century weaponry, and a whole squad of fascinating historical folks. And in between that, balls-to-the-wall action and general insanity. And comedy. And a guy fucks a bear. I mean, what more could you ask for?

Digging show, particularly because it's set after the Russo-Japanese War. That's a time period that I haven't really seen in animated or film form. Even more than that, it also features Ainu people. I'm not familiar with that group, other than snippets from scattered news articles. It'll be a neat to learn about their culture. I'm not just interested in the Ainu, but also the rest of Japan's culture and mannerisms during that time period.

Sugimoto's not too interesting for now, but I imagine he'll become so after we learn more about it. In contrast, Asirpa is quite intriguing from the start. She looks like a young girl or teenager, but she is very composed and efficient. Even adults have trouble attaining those attributes. Though I guess makes sense since she's grown and survived in an unforgiving environment.

The CGI didn't mesh particularly well with the line art, and the team-up proposal at the end as well as the decision to go hunting a bunch of dudes to skin felt contrived. But otherwise pretty entertaining.

Eh. On the 3 episode warning list. Not fond of the idea of skinning people. What's next cannibalism?

I've read the first three volumes...so far at least, you won't have to worry too much about skinning people

With no expectations other than "action" I quite enjoyed it.

Slightly heavy on the talking, but that seems like the setup for the whole story so have to get it out of the way.

Russians were not expecting anyone to make it to the trench ...

Overall, this was a good episode of Haven't You Heard, I'm Sugimoto. Establishing him as some sort of berserker, the cockamamie story about prison tattoos, and him fist fighting a bear mean that this is going to be at least somewhat subtle.

Hmm, it was okay. I'm a little bit disappointed that there was no comedy in it. I thought it'd be an action series with a lot of blood and maybe even gore but also a series that doesn't take itself too seriously.
The characters themselves aren't anything special but I don't have a problem with it as long as they have a great chemistry later on.
There are two things that bothered me a little bit.
-Punching a bear is straight out stupid when you have a gun. But at least he acknowledged how stupid it was.
-Killing and skinning people because of their tattoos also seems like a really stupid plan to me. They could trace the tattoos on paper or thin white fabric. Like this they would only have to make sure that the people with the tattoos are unconscious for at best an hour. Besides, it wouldn't be as obvious as killing everyone involved in the plan and carrying their skin around. If done right the people with the tattoos wouldn't even notice that somebody has their part of the map.

Overall not a bad first episode but there are many things that could've been done better.

Oh don’t worry, there will be some comedy later on. The facial expressions are hilarious in Golden Kamuy

Shitty CGi bear and all, I'm actually really liking this. Interested on where it goes. A manga I was meaning to check out, but never got around to doing so.

Really interesting so far. This was a good first episode with the exception of the CGI. The wolf actually blended in with the 2D animation fairly well. The bears on the other hand... Yikes.
