Just finished Fate/Zero after binging Fate/stay night (Unlimited Blade Works); I'm just blown away. The character development, the fleshing out of the magic system, the heroic spirits' backgrounds and of course the twists and turns. I'm stoked for apocalypse, but I feel there's no way the story will be better. I think I just need to bask in this for a while, and what better way than to discuss it with others??

Zero is a prequel. The story for UBW came out years before Zero, so it doesn't really matter

Personally, I think that Zero is the best of the Fate bunch. They are all good in their own way, but Zero fits as an anime adaptation the best since it began as a light novel rather than a visual novel like Fate Stay Night. It is like a beautiful Greek tragic play, where the audience knows the horrible ending is coming (it's FATED after all) and yet is brought to empathize with the characters and their struggle against the inevitable end. Its a brilliant angle.

Ill leave questions, whether you want to answer them, up to you.. That is if you really wanted to talk about Zero, maybe others would want to join.

Who is your favorite servant, and Master? Mine would be Rider, and Kiritsugu. Rider just had that presence, and that outlook on life that just felt so inspiring, a true king in my mind. Kiritsugu was dark, but realistic, he had that humanity still within him, but his heart was torn between being the one to save others, in the end realizing that 1 life is much more precious to have been saved in the midst of the world burning around him, trying to be the one to make the right decision left him incapable of caring for the ones around him. His heart was in the right place, but his Ideals left him a broken man. Beautiful really, no other character has had such an impact on me.

What did you initially think about Saber? I know when I first watched it, Saber was the only character to actually have to build my respect towards her character, since she was such a Naive "King" in the eyes of Archer and Rider, their rule felt more acclaimed, that they understood how to lead their people to victory, but such a noble knight such as Saber, at first she felt unfit, wanting to free her people, she would ultimately forget her role as a king to lead them, but then overtime she just had this unyielding determination, chivalry amongst the betrayal, and it starts to make you feel her struggle. A character that felt so real, that at the end of the series, I had such an affinity for her actual role, and respected her as a "King" King of kings

I have much more, but for now

Hopefully the Heavens Feel trilogy is just as good, but should be since its done by Ufotable, all the fate shows not by them have been pretty lame IMO.

Well, I can tell you as someone who saw PT. 1 in theaters in November, Heaven's Feel is THE best Fate anything, whether it be route (Rin is best girl though), or series/movie. It's just better than Zero & UBW in every way. It has the serious tone, suspense, and unpredictability of an actual secret war like Zero, and just everything that UBW was lacking. And it's just nuts. Truly a fantastic movie and I've been frothing to watch the next ones.

Now, will I actually sit down and read through the VN since I have it?

Nah.

I would read the VN, but that shit is TOO LONG (with 2 routes I've already seen adapted, even though Fate was a mess lol, I'd get so bored reading through Fate & UBW. And I HAVE tried reading it, a couple weeks ago in fact, and I just couldn't bear it.) and I've crawled through enough forums, wikis, and YT Lore videos on both Tsukihime and FSN to say I know much more than an only anime fan, and much less than a VN reader lol.

I don't think Zero spoils THAT much in regards to HF but that's just me. And I don't think anime only viewers will feel spoiled by Zero when watching HF.

Reading is fundamental. I really enjoy reading Visual Novels...although I think they tend to add in more superfluous text than many novels...other that Michener.

So did Heaven's Feel part 1 have much sexual content, or was it all dolphins and hugging like the TV series portrayed it?

I have to agree with you, Rider is my favorite servant. His personality is overwhelming, and he was the epitome of manliness. I seriously teared up when he fought Archer for the last time (but partly because of Archer's acknowledgement of him as a King, seriously good stuff there). It was especially touching when it was revealed he was using only his mana instead of his masters, and that he was struggling with the grief about never seeing Oceanus. Kiritsugu is probably also my favorite master, but he was also more developed than most of the others. Overall I loved how much darker the story was over UBW.

Saber, Saber, Saber. Since she was the leading role in UBW I felt they kinda dropped her aside. I think it was fascinating giving Gilgamesh a much larger role and fleshing out his character to the point that I actually liked him by the end; rather than in UBW where he was just kind of a dick throwing stuff around. I already had preconceptions about Saber going in and afterwards she seemed more like a broken little girl, something to be won by the larger-than-life kings Rider and Archer. I just kind of felt bad for her, like she was drug along in this messed up ride.

Okay, addressing everyone else! I had no idea people responded to my thread, because notifications (lack there of). All the people telling me I ruined the visual novels for myself, it's alright! I never really had any intentions to pick them up anyway, ergo I watched the anime. I wouldn't have the patience to go through it all over and over anyways. Plus, I read a lot of books (in the middle of LotR -puts me to sleep at night-, dark tower, culture, lions of al rassan, the list goes on).

As for the reason I watched UBW before Zero, it came out first. I'm not at all upset by that either, I found the story of Zero much, much more interesting than UBW. I think if I had watched Zero first I would have had a really hard time finishing UBW. Part of the reason is that you get all the side characters from UBW fleshed out, like when you learn how much of an asshole Tokiomi is. I'll probably end up diving into apocalypse even though I'm afraid I'll burn myself out. But, thats because everything else I'm watching is still coming out - Hero, Darling, Shokugeki, One Piece (yes I'm caught up - almost twice over), and now Megalobox. DB Super can suck it, so disappointed, and I stopped with Naruto right after the Pain fight when it was still coming out.

As a footnote, I was pretty smashed when I started this thread XD

Fate UBW came out after, not before F/Zero. However I don't see a problem with watching something out of order. I've watched other anime out of order, if it's a well done story sometimes it's more fun to see the first episodes as 'prequel'.
In the case of Fate/Zero, I happened to watch that one first, several years ago. Then watched UBW (and liked the first half but the second half carried the Shiro vs Shiro thing over the top) I feel like Fate/Zero is one of the best adult anime I've ever seen; it ranks pretty high up there in that respect but also gets weighed down by too much unnecessary violence- especially the extreme violence towards women didn't feel too great seeing that done TWICE.

I would recommend doing two things from this point. First, I would re-watch Fate/Zero in the English dub if you haven't already- which as I remember it was almost better than the Japanese dub- and the Japanese was excellent anyway. It will make for a different viewing- it's a dialogue heavy story so you'll enjoy those parts much more.
Second, watch the original Fate/Stay Night anime, I think it's from 2006. Unless you're one of those people who never watches anime more than 5 years old, it's a much better telling than UBW to my opinion, it's less violent and more enjoyable, and you'll want to watch it again and again. It also takes the story in a more plausible direction- and for Saber fans- a more preferable one. (I might count myself as a Rider fan in that one- she's one of the sexiest and most mysterious servants, and has a much bigger role in the original anime whereas she gets dissed in UBW.)
Given its impact I feel like Fate/Stay Night was a ground-breaking anime for its time, a transformational event in fantasy story telling. Due to that it's probably among the most unappreciated- made worse because of the unfortunate method of alternate retellings as opposed to linear storytelling which resulted in Unlimited Blade Works being made. Decide for yourself- I think it can be had on DVD fairly cheaply.

Did you just name-drop James A. Michener in an anime forum?
