The official Twitter account for the BanG Dream! franchise announced on Saturday that production on a new anime series has been green-lit. BanG Dream! 2nd Season will premiere next January. In addition, the staff is also simultaneously announcing the production on the 3rd Season for an October 2019 premiere.

Plot:
When she was a child, Kasumi Toyama (played by Poppin' Party's lead singer, Aimi) felt a heart-pounding thrill every time she gazed at the stars, and she's been looking without success for something that could inspire the same feeling ever since. One day, she comes across a star-shaped guitar in a rundown pawnshop and, for the first time, discovers the thrill she's been searching for. Kasumi becomes determined to form an all-girl band, and her search leads her to four like-minded souls: Saya, Arisa, Rimi, and Tae (all brought to life by the members of Poppin' Party). Does this band have what it takes to make their dreams of stardom come true?

Cool stuff. The first season wasn't the most original show out there but it had a lot more heart (and better production value) than many seemed to give it credit for. I'm looking forward to this.

Considering I started playing the rhythm game not too long ago, I can definitely get behind this. I remember the first season being relatively average but I'll probably be rewatching it again, soon enough, and be looking forward to the coming seasons.

I'm glad it's got at least 2 more seasons! I still haven't gotten around to watching the first one yet (waiting for my finals to finish next week before I start). I hope there'll be more focus on the other bands.

Not one, but two? The franchise must be doing well if there's going to be two seasons. I enjoyed the first one well enough (while it had some flaws) so i welcome them. As for the game, haven't tried, but considering.

That just goes to show how much of a big thing girl musical shows are in Japan seeing that these kinds of shows have a better chance at getting a sequel than many better shows out there. And with this getting a second and third season, plus a spinoff series, they sure have big plans even though it has nowhere near the fan following that K-On! does.

I wouldn't say it was the anime alone, but rather the project as a whole that allowed for bigger plans for the franchise. The anime definitely wasn't that popular during its run, but at some point the franchise kind a blew up a little. I don't know whether that was just because of the mobile game or what, but without it's influx of fans, which I can only assume was due to that popularity of the mobile game, I would bet this wouldn't be seeing another season just because it's a show with musical girls. For sure it's not as big as K-On! since that would be a task and a half, but the fanbase has grown into relatively respectable numbers I believe, which I can also only assume isn't reflected in general reception of the first season of the anime.

I think the mobile game is both something that built the fanbase but also feeds the fanbase, so it's definitely something that can't be overlooked. I mean, it (and the property as a whole) are popular enough to have pushed the game to receive a translated international release. There are a lot of really big mobile games in Japan and very few of those receive international releases. Either way, the emergence of the mobile game definitely gave a major boost to the series in, if nothing else, allowing it into even more hands and heads than the anime did.

it's really just important to keep in mind that Bang Dream was initially started as a multimedia project. The apparent success, or lack thereof, of the anime wasn't the only thing in play. There were live events, concerts, album releases, multiple merch products, etc. right off the hop so there are multiple ways for fans to get onboarded to the series as well as for those fans to enjoy (and spend money supporting) the series once they are fans. And, of course, the reception to the first anime season within Japan itself had a much bigger impact on it's continuation (or not) than the reception outside of it. I was in Japan not that long after the first season ended and Bang Dream was one of the more visible series around at the time.

And, yeah, comparisons to K-On just feel rather weak. K-On was/is a landmark classic that many shows have been inspired by. It's like slagging a modern day magical girl show because it's not as big as Sailor Moon.

It's too early to tell but the cover art for the new season is screaming 3D to me which has me worried. While the original animation had its flaws my biggest nag about was the use of the 3D, but again it's still to early to tell. I will still and play the game.

Hoping we get more than a cameo from Roselia in the new series.

I would love to get a full length video of Neo-Aspect. I missed out on the limited edition CD so I guess I'll have to live with just the shortened version. Anfang is to date my favourite release from the BanG Dream project.

Several CMs with Roselia, Afterglow, Pastel Palettes, and Happy World were posted today. Looking like each will be getting more of a role than just cameos in S2.

Wonder if the events that ended Garupa☆Pico will carry over to season 2. Specifically the venue.
