Same here: can use Crunchyroll app without login on Sony Android TV just fine, when entering login information app crashes and on restart keeps crashing.

Clearing cache and data, reinstalling app, restarting TV does not help. Started on November 4, 2018, used an app for more than a year without issues.

The last change I've done before app started to fail was adding two shows to the queue from the "New Catalog Titles" section. Removing them does not fix an issue.

It is somewhat sad to see this thread with same issue reported more than 6 months ago.

I did open support ticket with Crunchyroll.

Same thing... Come on crunchy roll folks... stop playing around with crap against a live system. We pay for premium and have exceptions of service accessibility... I know for a fact it is not our side of the coin that is causing the problem but something you guys are doing on your side... we cannot go for months without issue and then all of a sudden get hit with the same problem as so many others are experiencing...

Support suggested I point my Android TV to public DNS servers. I fail to see the logic in that, as issue appears to be with random authentication server going bad. Unless they assume that by pointing TV to a different DNS server it'll get reassigned to a different Crunchyroll server, if their system is distributed. Even if so, that is not a solution and unlikely a good consistent workaround.

The issue on my TV is currently gone, I can access my Premium membership account again. I do not known for how long. This is what I have done, and not sure if it was the workaround or issue just went away on its own:

1) Cleared cache and data, restarted TV;
2) Started Crunchyroll app;
3) Opened Account settings, entered my subscription email address and intentionally invalid password;
4) Got my login instantly rejected;
5) In a new window which asked to re-enter email and password, entered valid password for my Premium Membership;
6) Success!

After I've done that, third day in a row Crunchyroll app on my Android TV now starts and runs without issue.

If app starts consistently failing again, I intent to cancel my subscription and create new with different email address for login. Will see if such reset works, but expect it will.
That would wipe out viewing history and queue, but it is lesser trouble than not being able to access Crunchyroll on main viewing device in my household.

I suspect my cable ISP blocks home devices access to third party DNS servers, as (by the way) it should.

"As it should"? Where do you get that idea?

You can also confirm whether your ISP is blocking third party DNS by using the nslookup command. For example:

nslookup google.com 8.8.8.8

...would query Google public DNS and return the current IP address for Google.com. If your ISP were blocking 3rd party DNS, the command would fail.

Just signed up for the free premium trial today after watching a few episodes of some shows I like using my Nvidia shield / tv and PC to watch with.

However after turning off my Nvidia shield for a couple of hours and coming back to watch some more I cannot get the app to start comes up with unknown error. But on my PC its fine very frustrating atm.

Ive cleared the apps data and cache and uninstalled it then reinstalled and the app starts in the basic form but as soon as I re enter my login details its the same error loop of not working and restarting. Ive changed my dns to googles 8.8.8.8 from auto on my rotuer and nothing just says sorry unknown error still and tries to restart how nice of it lol but it works on the pc grr

Ive tried the above of entering the wrong password then the correct but still the error loop is there

Any advice or tips would be welcome thanks

After clearing cache and uninstalling the app, before reinstall, go here and remove the device: /acct/?action=devices

After that, do your reinstall, then clear cache again just to make sure it goes to zero bytes, then finally start the app to see if you can log in.

Same problem here

every time I try logging in, it goes into the endless "We restarted the app for you" loop.

The problem with "Unknown error/We restarted the app for you" loop went away for a while for me, but now it is back in full force. Does not matter what I do: clear cache, restart my Sony TV, enter invalid password followed by valid one - nothing helps.

That issue returned when once again I've added a show from "New Catalog Titles" to my queue. That might be a coincidence, but it is second time when I am adding an old show that Crunchyroll got to my queue and getting "unknown error" back.

The only reliable solution I have found, which is not much of a fix, is to connect Roku player to my TV and use it to watch Crunchyroll. Roku player has been rock solid so far. It is really disappointing that on an Android TV any other app works but Crunchyroll.

The ticket I opened with Crunchyroll support got a reply "we will be escalating it" with nothing happening for weeks after that. I am willing to do troubleshooting on my side, up to the point of loading debug version of an app and sending logs to developers, but nobody asks me to. I have no longer hope issue will be dealt with.

I know, that it is of little help to Android phone and tablet users, but if you have an Android TV like I do, have extra HDMI port available on it, few dollars to spare, don't want to abandon Crunchyroll for whatever reason - buying the cheapest Roku device could be a solution.

I'm so fed up with this, every time I try to use Crunchyroll on my Nvidia shield there is something wrong with the app. It's infuriating, I've now downloaded the mobile version APK just so I watch anime. I don't want to use another platform to watch anime because of ads and UI design but at this moment in time I'm seriously considering cancelling my subscription!

Just at this moment (Christmas week) the cheapest Roku player I can find on Amazon Canada (model 3900CA) goes for $35, $10 off regular price. That is not a huge amount of money to pay to get rid of frustrations with Android Crunchyroll app, especially when said app just fails all the time.

Roku Crunchyroll app does not have ads for premium subscription. It also has useful feature not available in Android app, such as: when you pause the show there is no icon to resume it covering bottom half-screen of the TV. As such, you can pause at what moment you want and review all the details of the picture. Comes handy when show has a lot of text on the page, flashing for a moment - had one of those this season.

Of course, cancelling subscription is always an option.
