Whit Monday is a holiday that is celebrated the day after Pentecost, a feast day in the Christian calendar. This year's Whit Monday fell on May 21.

Countries and territories where Whit Monday is a public holiday include Antigua and Barbuda, Anguilla, Austria, the Bahamas, Barbados, Belgium, the British Virgin Islands, the Cayman Islands, Cyprus, Denmark, Dominica, France, Germany, Greece, Grenada, Hungary, Iceland, Ivory Coast, Luxembourg, Monaco, Montserrat, the Netherlands, Norway, Romania, Saint Lucia, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Solomon Islands, Switzerland, Togo, and Ukraine.

How about your country? Is Whit Monday a holiday where you live?

For me, apparently it's not. My university and my local public library was open on that day.

We have Whit Sunday and Whit Friday in the UK. Not public holidays but the events are marked by church congregations marching around the towns, at least in some parts of the country.

The churches between Manchester and Huddersfield often march with their local brass bands. The bands then participate in a band contest on the evening of Whit Friday to bring the events to a close.
