Episode link is up. 6:30 weekly stream.

Main girl Haruka is cute but she has a lot to learn about volleyball. I smell some competition already coming from that Narumi girl.

Expected the fan service but it actually pretty well done so far for the show considering it's about beach volleyball.

The first episode is now up. Fridays at 6:30am: http://www.crunchyroll.com/harukana-receive/episode-1-we-dont-need-aces-774759

Episode 1

Haruka has come over to live with Kanata in Okinawa, and Haruka just couldn't wait to get in the ocean. And then she stumbles upon a couple of girls playing beach volleyball. So Haruka and Kanata decide to play, and they played like the beginners that they are as Haruka only played indoor volleyball, while Kanata doesn't have much experience with the beach game. So Narumi proves her point that in the beach version there are no aces, and it matters that both players are up to snuff. Pretty much, it's all about getting into the game as Haruka has quite a lot to learn not realizing that those two are the defending champions. Pretty much, it is what I was expecting.

Episode 1

The first episode starts off with what looks like the finals of the competition and than we are brought back to the beginning to see how it all happens. Haruka moves to Okinawa with her grandma and cousin kanata. Once she arrives she meets Kanata and is surprised that she is short. We quickly get to the beach and Haruka revving her clothes and reveals she had a bikini under. Soon enough Haruka meets two volleyplayers and gets into the game by watching them. When Kanata arrives Haruka is down to play a game with Kanata trying to warn her about who they are going up against. The game turns out horrible for them since Haruka doesn't know how to use the wind to her advantage or other small things. However Narumi accepts a revenge match only after Haruka knows the game better.

The first episode turned out great and we quickly get into the fan service. Of course theres fan service since this is a anime about playing beach volleyball. Haruka sure gets fired up she reminds me of Natsu. When it comes to the other team Narumi comes off as a bitch, but she seems to be a good sport at the end. I can't wait to see the other girls in the show especially the twins.

I like the setting Okinawa a lot has tropical vibe and house is located on the beach. Nice to see someone tall in Japanese anime because it does happen sometimes not a lot but sometimes

All I'll say is that opening soundtrack is so good and so damn catchy. As expected of Rasmus Faber, always killing it with his OP/ED and soundtracks.

I was expecting a lot less drama, but lets see what's in store with beach volleyball.

Was afraid this show was just going to be nothing but fan service but I was surprisingly wrong. Looks like going to be a good sports show.

Damn. that was much much better than I was expecting. I love volleyball. Like I said I prefer court volleyball and more specifically 6 on 6. But I really enjoyed that.

I know we're just 1 episode in, but there is a lot to offer here for all anime fans. Cute girls in swimsuits for the boys. Strong and engaging female cast for the ladies. Comedy. A beautiful setting. And pretty darned good representation of volleyball already.

I am a bit biased since I quite enjoy volleyball a lot, but still. As much as I enjoy show like Keijo, I was worried this would be another show like that. Glad I was pleasantly surprised otherwise. Definitely keeping this on the watch list.

Pretty much my reaction from ep. 1

So this time the bitch has no teats. I can only assume, based on this episode, that Kanata and Narumi were sleeping together, and their torrid love affair is why the pipsqueak gave up the sanded path to become a tiny, bashful shut-in.

Haruka, warrior princess, is probably going to be a driving force, and eventually a ripped one.

Really solid first episode, and very much on par with the feeling of the manga. My only complaint would really just be that the art, particularly in the faces, phases from pretty nice into not so nice territory now and then. It's mostly good but had it's questionable moments and that may not bode well for the inevitable mid season anime art slide as seen in most series. It's also a bit of a rough draw that this is airing in the same season as Hanebado. From what we've seen of Hanebado so far, it definitely feels like that will be much more serious than Harukana is but it does still feel like it will be mining some of the same territory in sports that aren't extremely different from each other.

Really looking forward to next week for more.

That went really well. Much better than I thought it would actually. I'm tentatively hopeful.

If you're going to do a women's beach volleyball series no matter how seriously you set your tone "plot" is inevitable. The players make a deliberate choice to wear bikinis even though they have a very wide range of uniform options. That they managed to dodge a few opportune moments for fan service such as when Haruka went down was a good sign. She landed on her backside instead of face down with her butt sticking up like in Hanebado.

I suppose how scenes are perceived will be up to the eye of the viewer. For example, when giving signs to their partner a player puts their hands on their backsides so the other team can't see. Do showing the signs constitute "fan service" or it being true to the sport?

And I don't recall any jiggling though I'm sure if I go looking it was there. However, that I don't recall it means it wasn't shoved in the audience's face. (Or it happened so fast I missed it while reading the subtitles. Either way.)

The second episode will be the real test. Much like I'm hoping Hanebado can pull it together in its second episode and make me care about the characters I'm hoping Harukana can keep the momentum its first episode has created.

Kind of generic, but cute designs and gorgeous background art. And a righteous focus on the booty. Doesn't seem like there will be much to expect from this show, but still a decent time filler.
