Synopsis

Hanako, an athletically proficient, yet thick-headed student with a weird fashion sense, plays a game with the American transfer student Olivia. However, their vigor irritated their classmate Kasuki who dislikes playing games since she has always been teased by her sister for being bad at them. With a turn of events, it was found out that Hanako is terrible at English. Thus, she asked her foreign classmate Olivia to help her, but Olivia, who is only born and raised in Japan with foreign parents, can't actually speak English at all! Watch over these three girls' surreal school-life comedy.

First episode is now up. Sundays at 6:30am: http://www.crunchyroll.com/asobi-asobase-workshop-of-fun-/episode-1-equivalent-exchange-cheap-thrills-pleasure-seekers-the-kind-pervert-774960

Episode 1

Olivia has transferred in from America, and it begins with the girls playing rock-paper-scissors with the loser looking away and getting slapped, and stuff. As it turns out, Kasumi sucks at English, and while Olivia's parents are from America, Olivia herself has lived in Japan. And then comes a cheap thrill poking a pencil around the hand, and then a compass, with Olivia losing and as the penalty, teach some English. Then Hanako joined the soft tennis club to impress the other kids, but that didn't work out. So Kasumi decides to form a club with Hanako and Olivia around learning English with Kasumi beating Olivia in a thumb war. The club came to be known as the Pass club after Pastimers Club was rejected. Then the club members set up an inflatable swimming pool inside the clubroom, and they cause trouble then lie to the teacher about Hanako peeing, but he lets that slide as long as they cleaned up. That was pretty funny to see these girls acting so dumb, and there was a crapload of wordplay in this, all while those characters put on those ugly faces. The show certainly is good for some laughs and cheap thrills.

That was certainly not quite was I was expecting. Another show this season that may be a bit longer in run time than it should be based on the content but they did segment it enough that it didn't feel as abrasive as something like Chio's. Still, pretty enjoyable overall even if it definitely doesn't fit the standard Cute Girls mold I was sort of hoping for. Also, if you're going for "ugly" art then this does a much, much better job of it than Backstreet Girls is doing.

So it's more of a comedy gag show about some girls and jokes that I think are somewhat funny so far.

Not too impressed by it but I think it's a keeper for now. The animation quality looks kinda unique for this series anyway. I kinda feel like the show is more suitable for 12-14 minutes length.

Oh that was hilarious, went in expecting a CGDCT show but this is so much better. The Krillin profiles are weird but other than that love the unconventional art style.

I think it's a show that will really polarize option, and I can imagine many people scratching their heads and wondering what they watched.

I enjoyed it though, and found myself laughing pretty loudly in places.

For sure. This really does fall into the Pop Team Epic sort of camp. If you like it, you're probably going to love it. If you don't like it, you're probably going to think it's one of the worst things ever. I find it interesting that it's in the same season as Backstreet Girls given that, to me, they both sort of hit upon the same style to the point where they even have similar flaws (though I feel at this very early point that this is better).

This is what the visual medium was meant to portray. I don't think any part of this show failed on any level, so it was okay, I guess.

Does it bother anyone else that not-American girl is rendered with so little color and such faint lines that she's practically invisible in many scenes?

As to the show content, I think I'd like it better if it were a series of shorter episodes, than a bunch of short segments strung into full-length episodes.

This was a pretty humorous first episode that had me laughing quite a bit, but it's not quite what I was expecting or what I wanted.

While I would have preferred something a little cuter and more laid-back, I suppose stuff like this doesn't hurt every now and then.

But the art style when it portrays the characters normally (not with the weird faces or gags) is really appealing to me. Like, I really wish I could get a normal CGDCT, or yuri title that looks like this. The faded colors with bright lighting gives me this impression of a really elegant and cute series. To put it simply, I would kill for a series like Maria-sama ga Miteru with these kind of visuals. Ah, well, one can dream, right? Well, I guess Aoi Hana is kind of of like that? Vaguely? But not with the same artistic flair on display here. I mean, just Olivia's eyes and lashes are positively enchanting in the normal style. I suppose they did it intentionally to clash with her absurd personality.

I did enjoy this and will probably watch more. However, if you were to just take the OP from this episode without watching the rest, then imagine what this show would be like purely from that - what you get is something that would have been out of this world for me personally. But what we got was pretty good too.

Similarly the ED felt the show had suddenly gone to the dark side. God knows what type of show you'd have guessed it was from that.
