We Rent Tsukumogami Discussion

Posted 7/22/18 , edited 10/7/18
Oct 7 2018 - Note from moderator: Normally we close threads when the OP has deleted their account, as has happened here. However, since the penultimate episode released just today, with the final one expected next week, we'll be keeping it open a while longer so discussion can continue and conclude.

Synopsis:

A pair of adopted siblings run a rental shop in old Edo (Present-day Tokyo) where fire and flooding is prevalent and everyday items are rented out to not impede when they flee. Mixed in the inventory are old objects that have turned into spirits after hundreds of years of existence called Tsukumogami. These supernatural creatures listen to conversations around town and spread it as gossip. It is up to the good-hearted siblings to react to these quarrels and resolve the situation using the powers of the Tsukumogami.

It seems first episode is already available on Anime Digital Network which is also simulcasting this series for France about 1 hour ago. I wonder when this will be available on Crunchyroll.

Episode 1

That opening theme song is great.

So it begins with a rat on the loose, and an explanation of what tsukumogami are, objects that are possessed by spirits to help out others. Seiji runs a show that rents these spirit objects to others, and to find the rat, he lends a Gligar in Nosetsu. Little did they know that the rat is a tsukumogami himself. And about that thief, that's not really a thief. Not bad so far as I like how Seiji is on top of things, all while the tsukumogami there are an interesting bunch.

Huh.. that was not quite what I expected. The mystery elements, particularly in dealing with arranged marriages and the red light district feel like they belong in a more mature show, but the tsukumogami elements make the show feel like a kids show. It just comes across as muddled and disorienting. And of course they're not actual siblings! Can't say that bit shocked me because anime but I was a little surprised they started leaning so hard into it in the very first episode.

A show about things that gain life by being cherished in a shop that lends out items so that they can be abandoned without attachments run by adopted siblings with somewhat more than mild attachments outside the familial.
A mystery without any real mystery about an accessory strap, a jealous brother, a lecher, and a milk sop.

I'm not sure that a show about people and things desperately craving love is going to go very well.

Having a soft spot for Tsugumomo drew me to watch this one and I'm pretty intrigued.

The tsukumogami are a bit Disney but clearly this is not intended for a young audience.

Happy to stick around and see where it goes.

This gave me a bit of a Mushishi vibe. A lot of explanation about the supernatural.

Seems this episode was kind of excusing the practice of arranged marriages. Basically saying it was fate and they would learn to love each other.

Big Sis (not blood related) seems to want a more romantic relationship with little bro and both of them seem to be chasing after something.

I could have sworn I read a synopsis of this somewhere saying it was about a rental shop in an area prone to floods where people rented stuff instead of buying it, because they were used to losing everything.

Sort of what it says at the top of the thread. Also, Edo, as a whole, kept burning down.

Nice OP and color use. Reminds me of Konohana Kitan with its colorful patterns and landscapes that pop.
