Depends on the SoL. I loves me a good, enjoyable, relaxing SoL on a Monday night.

Overused. It can also reflect the boring mood of everyday life.

I like a good SoL better than an action anime. Some fo my favorite shows are Barakamon, Usagi Drop, Kids on the Slope Silver Spoon & Non Non Biyori

if it has a strong plot and/or interesting enough to capture my attention then I'll watch it, if not then I'll pass. I don't hate nor like it, it's typically the genre I'll wonder to towards the last because the ones I've ever encountered to watch was related to school of some sort. yes, there are others out there outside of school settings, those are the ones I enjoy. however I have enjoyed a few that have been related to school. so, as stated, don't like/hate but if it interests me I'm going to watch it (well sooner or later, got still a large list to shuffle through even if I have seen a lot). one of the more dominating reason why I left my comfort genre long ago, was running out of things to watch in it, so began to find more that interested me.

its not boring. I like watching it because maybe in one way or another you can relate to the situations characters go through or maybe to laugh a little. some of them are really funny.

It can be.

I'd say that the 'slice of life' tag is more bread than the meat of an anime. What goes on top of it varies, usually it's comedy, romance, or something educational. If that aspect is pulled off well then so will the story be.

For instance, Yuruyuri, Lucky Star, and K-on are all considered slice of life, however, where their popularity comes from is the cute character designs and the comedic moments. Silver Spoon can be considered slice of life, but it's also what I'd call an educational shonen, it teaches you about how modern farming works in Japan and also has a coming of age / romcom story as a side.

On the other hand, you have Otaku Ni Koi Wa Muzukashii. It's supposed to be a romcom, but it decides to use the romance and comedy as a backdrop for people to talk about video games and anime rather than the other way around. As a result, all you have is an anime that is a collection of references to other anime. It gets pretty boring.

Yeah, this pretty much covers it completely (especially the part about Wotakoi).

Slice of Life is such a catch all genre that there really aren't all that many shows that are called SoL that actually are pure SoL. Accurate to definition or not, SoL is generally just used as a term to label something that doesn't comfortably or completely into other more strict genres. As such you really do have to dig a little more into the details of what's going on.

Personally, I prefer shows with at least a little SoL to many other genres simply because it means the characters will usually have a little more room to grow and shine, and characters are often what interests me in anime more than stories or action. Frankly, original interesting stories and quality unique action aren't the strong point of a lot of anime.

So, do I find SoL boring? Maybe. If something is pure SoL with really nothing at all going on then there's a good chance I will find it less interesting. But I'll also find your typical action or drama series boring too if it doesn't at least incorporate at least some SoL elements.

I generally prefer my anime to have some kind of narrative. I don't find slice of life to be boring as much as I just find that most of it is lacking something. that being said, there are shows that can be categorized as slice of life that I enjoy, because it has those SoL elements, but the characters are also striving toward something.

Girls' Last Tour is a perfect example of slice of life that I found compelling and interesting to watch. it depicted the girls' day to day lives in a post-apocalyptic wasteland, their journey to try to find... something. the many people they meet on their trek to find any remnants of civilization.... it was at times sorrowful, at times hopeful, and all around extremely beautiful.

true. i found that show mesmerizing as it incorporates “daily lives” with drama with a hint of comedy. Definitely in the top 10 anime of all time that i’ve watched.

idk from what i concluded SoL need to be paired with others as well (comedy, romance etc) but i’m also open to other possibilities. i just feel that just SoL might be too empty, as *inhales deeply* I found The Devil is a Part-Timer and Kokoro Connect being pretty dull.

I like The slice of life animes because, sometimes you can actually feel alike the main character or just other character from the anime! I loved them!

My impression is that anime is built on a three-legged stool of world, characters, and story.*

Slice of life tends to assume a normal real-world world, so the other two legs need to be stronger to engage a viewer.

They often dispense with story as well, relying on very light single-episode stories perhaps with some light overlying arc/theme to tie them together and prevent complete incoherence.

So either they end up with very strong characters... or they end up being blah.

* not to ignore things like art, sound, and direction but those are more about execution and production quality and tend to be independent variables.
