Ugh just stick to anime Crunchyroll. When a show starts preaching to me before it even airs I'm already turned off. I remember when The Boondocks came out I just started watching it and kept watching it because it was entertaining. Only later did I find out it was created by an African American writer, none of the advertising was "Finally a black cartoon written by an actual black guy. You have to watch because diversity !". That's just so dumb. How about you just hire people who are good animators and writers regardless of their ethnicity or gender? 'Oh sorry dude you can't work on this, we know you are much more talented than everyone else working on it but unfortunately you have a penis...unless you want it removed in gender reassignment surgery? No? OK sorry can't hire you, we're trying to makeup for the wrongs of the past by using the exact same discrimination but in reverse'.
If this is the type of stuff CR is going to be doing with my subscription money, I'll definitely be cancelling it.

I canceled my subscription for 3 main reasons.

1. Site and apps are unstable and have been for an extended period of time.
2. Losing more and more anime to competitors, including sequels to series that were already on Crunchyroll.
3. Censorship of Danmachi: Memoria Freese and all the lies surrounding it.

One of these is a really simple fix that you aggressively refuse to do. The other two require money and manpower. Which you clearly have, but would rather spend on producing a cartoon that no one asked for rather than maintaining your core service. I deeply regret my last year's worth of subscriptions after all of this.

Now, let's say we were in a hypothetical situation where the site WASN'T going downhill and you actually had nothing better to spend our money on. This show still looks like crap. Cal Arts style is an immediate turnoff. And to add to that, your big announcement trailer spent ONE SENTENCE discussing what the show is about. The rest of it was about your production team's gender ratio, which I couldn't care less about. I really don't like getting into discussions about SJWs and feminists and what-have-you. But it's clear to me that this show only exists to make some kind of misguided statement rather than to actually produce quality content. Or do you honestly think that women are somehow inherently more capable of writing than men? Because that's just sexist.

I was content with just not being subscribed anymore, but now I'm going to actively discourage other people new to the anime community from using this service.

I can't believe their goal to sell the show is to advertise how "progressive" they are by having *gasp* female writers (100%; though 100% male is sexist, ah double standards) as if that's somehow impressive. Are they GOOD writers? Show me some actual footage of the show and characters talking so I can get a feel for that writing. Rather than sell the show based on identity politics.

Reminds me of a comic book with an overweight female super hero, with a hot hunky fit boyfriend, and the entire article discussing the comic book was about how progressive it was and didn't actually talk about the character's personality, her powers, nothing. Just identity politics. How do people think that's going to get people interested in content? I don't get it.

I don't care what a writer is. I care if they can write well. And I certainly don't care about the rest either, I don't care if 50% of the staff is women or you've got diversity. Good for you, what's that have to do with the show? How does that improve the show? If you claim it does, all I have to say is that the writing room is 100% women so you kind of disprove that claim by not having the same "winning" diversity in the writers room.

Almost like it makes no difference... I don't remember Sailor Moon commercials advertising to little ol' me that it was created by a woman. Cardcaptors (ugh that dub/butchering) same thing. I never knew that until I was much older, I didn't even know what manga was as a kid watching it. They were just awesome [at the time for Cardcaptors, but it lead me to the proper CCS which is awesome]. So I watched it. As kkmenchi said, The Boondocks as well. I watched it, and it was awesome. Never once did I know that it was created by a black man, I learned that much later. I didn't really think of who created it at all, I just loved it because it was well animated, funny, and smart.

This pushed me over the edge to cancel my membership. Which would've renewed in 2 days, so good timing CR. (Danmachi: Memoria Freese and the lies were a huge problem for me too)

I also find it odd Crunchyroll wouldn't do an Avatar: The Last Airbender or Boondocks style show instead of something that looks western animated. I applaud the hand drawn animation, but I don't see why it's a Crunchyroll show. It should look like anime and be anime inspired. But it doesn't look like that at all. Odd choice. But that would've been fine if not for the focus on identity of it's creators over the content of the show. I don't care if you're a purple dinosaur. Just tell me about the show. I can visually see you're a woman, you don't need to tell me. I'm not impressed by you being a woman. Plenty of women have created animations before. Plenty of women have written before. You're not special. That's not a selling point.

It's funny the small details some people just blow out of proportion. Very anime fan.

Either way, I'm interested. The art looks cute. If the show is good then that's all I need. I'm happy to see crunchyroll trying to expand. Producing their own stuff is definitely cool.

What small details are you referring to? The art style? That's pretty much all we know about the show. The gender ratio of the production staff? They spent more than half the trailer talking about it, so it's clearly a big deal to Crunchyroll.

While this isn't my sort of show, the negative reaction to this is just ridiculous. I'm interested in seeing what other original content they're working on.

The pitch to get people excited is a horrific flop.

Shut up about your diversity in hair color and talk about the actual show that is being created.

You have shown that your company has done nothing but waste time and resources in a flop of a show that sorely needed a PR person to create the presentation and not fixing and keeping the website and phone app stable.

I won't watch it, nobody wil watch it, no SJW diversity fan will subscribe to get it, it will fail. I know it, you know it, let's just watch it burn from afar. And watch an actual anime (or j-drama), because that's the FRIGGIN reason we're here in the first place!

It looks like basic bitch Cal Arts shit with anime style eyes plastered onto it. Plus have you seen the faces behind it? Get ready for a shitfest.

You do realize that a person's face or body style doesn't indicate a level of talent. At least give the show one episode before crapping all over it.
Until I see a real episode I'll keep an open mind and I'd wish everybody will do so as well.

After going from 500 likes / 600 dislikes they went to 514 likes /1700 dislikes, then disabled viewing the like/dislike ratio on the video. Why are they so scared of letting people comment/rate the video?

You have a point, if we are considering the art style. Series like Kemonozume, One Punch Man and Hunter x Hunter's source material, have art styles that aren't on the level of KyoAni, but substantiate it with a narrative many happen to find well written, including I. I do lament how often we let our political biases warp us to frothing rancor.

Look at the like/dislike ratio. Oh dear....

My gripe with the idea of the ‘Crunchyroll Originals’ is that the money could have been spent on improving the website and fixing the manga app. I know that the store has been recently updated but who knows whether CR will drop flash and change the video player to html5 or fix the manga app.
I am well aware that Crunchyroll can simultaneously work on original content shows and improve their service. However, it just seems to me that they’re neglecting the website and focusing more on smartphone games, original content shows etc.

In regards to the show, the staff make it out as if the show is going to be revolutionary. Personally, I think it sounds awfully generic. However, it was only a short teaser and things might change.
