Something I'm looking forward to: Kaede finding out that Sakuta's dating Mai, now that she can remember Mai being all over TV and magazines for her entire childhood. And that most of her current wardrobe is stuff Mai gave her from magazine photo shoots. Girl's got a few shocks in store beyond "it's been two years and we moved out of Yokohama".

Aaawww, Kaede is back, which is good, but also sad. It's for the best though, at least she got to do all of what she wanted in her notebook.

Quick stop-in without reading the thread:

Yep, that's about the timeline I was guessing. Not sure how the sub team missed translating that but I don't think it really impacted not knowing exactly how long ago Kaede lost her memories.

It is probably because that is now the template is provided and the translator nor the one QC questioned about it.

So the bruising/flushing/bloody spots on Kaede...

When she was going through the bullying, she was getting cuts. That's an apt metaphor.

But the bruising seems different. No one was speaking about her, so it's not from bullying. It seems to be a stress reaction, especially to her forcing herself out of her comfort zone. But then it also seems to fade quickly afterward. Could it maybe be related to her suppressed personality and memories? Literally rising up to the surface?

This episode is super dense in symbolism and meaning, it'll take me a while.

Why did Nodoka get so upset after talking with Sakuta when Mai left? That was a little confusing.

I think she was mad at herself for insinuating Sakuta was taking Kaede's problem too lightly. Then he explained there was nothing he could do for her and that as her big brother he needed to stay strong for her. Note as I pointed out above, the mother had a mental breakdown because there was nothing she could do for Kaede. So he is basically saying Kaede needs strong support in her life, not a bunch of people around her worrying and stressing her out.

The reason Nodoka got upset was she realized why Mai didn't ask the question she did, and realizing this and her competitive nature, got mad at Sakuta.

One thing I didn't see anyone bring up is that maybe Nodoka's response to what Sakuta said stems from her realizing that Mai could have been in the same position. Sakuta was talking about how being the older sibling meant not to show "x" and "y". I thought that maybe she was having an epiphany about how Mai might have been "colder" when they were younger and realized that Mai might have been thinking the same way Sakuta explained.

I'm actually incredibly sad now that this is coming to an end. Moreso that we will have to wait till 2019 for a movie.

Question yall, I know the anime covers volumes 1-5 and the movie in 2019 will cover 6-7... but will there be an ending for us with volumes 8 and 9?

I have tried looking for answers to this but I haven't found any word on the last volumes... anyone have anything to share?

That's a really good point. Of note: Sakuta's injury was external too---a result of him trying to fight the "atmosphere" at the hospital, or caused by a specific person...?

We'll wait. :)

I'm sad also. I've said it before but it bears repeating---the characters in this series are people most anyone would love to hang out with in real life.

Maybe volumes 8 & 9 (and more!) will be adapted into a second season after the movie???

Lots of hand-wringing over on the MAL boards about the show's success... Amazing how threatened some folks feel by the show's march up the rankings.

Uhh they are both Japanese don't know what you are implying but for anime characters with similar hair it's all about the eyes, notice their eyelashes point in different directions one up one down.

That's how I took it, it was like her old self coming to the surface. The more she did to be normal the more her old self came back, going to school seems to have clinched it.

In my experience, there are very few anime where the characters have a distinctly "Japanese" look. They're just...anime characters. BGS is no different.

That said, Mai and Shoko's character designs ARE similar, especially on a show that does a pretty good job of providing a variety of designs. It's probably intentional. The eyelash angle is a well-know anime trope and usually indicates "tsun level."

The "Japanese" look is that they both have long straight black hair. Everyone else apparently dyes their hair (like most real Japanese) but this anime's character designs definitely suffer from everyone having "same face" syndrome in addition to adolescent syndrome.
