Synopsis

It is a divine ritual, a martial art, a combat sport—it's sumo!!

A "small" new student, Ushio Hinomaru, appears before the weak little sumo club of Oodachi High School! The words "big" and "heavy" are the rules to this sport, which does not fit this newbie any inch, but this guy goes and does what...?! Ushio and the small sumo club climbs its way to the top!

The goal is Hinoshita Kaisan! (a title for the highest rank in professional sumo, equivalent of Yokozuna)

A fired up high school sumo tale—no retakes allowed!!

Heard this was going to be 24 episodes according to the BD listings.

Hmm, a show about sumo wrestling. Well, I think this was interesting considering the concepts and we meet Hinomaru right off the bat.

It's more of an episode that gave me the impression of the feel of the show so far.

There's also some amount of emotions from this episode too. However, Hinomaru is the one that stands up against bullies so he isn't going to let others make fun of his friend. What a badass guy. The actual sumo wrestling part was also pretty intense imo.

The first episode is now up: https://www.crunchyroll.com/hinomaru-sumo/episode-1-national-treasure-onimaru-kunitsuna-777724

Episode 1

So it begins with Hinomaru having a friendly match with Shinya, and then Shinya's ring, his only escape, gets wrecked by Yuma. That prompts Hinoamru to challenge Yuma and while Shinya is too chicken to fight, Hinomaru is staying put to fight. His objective is to withstand Yuma's punches for ten minutes, which was actually 15, but he survived it without a scratch, and showed Yuma who's boss. Well, that was pretty much what I expected, and it was alright. I probably will pass on this show as my interest level wasn't high coming in, but at least it looks decent enough.

The manga is really good, probably my favorite sports manga behind Ippo. This animation style tho... I looks... stiff I guess? Based on the first episode, I'm not really a fan of it but I'll keep watching to see if it gets better.

The anime itself, well, they already changed the story structure around and made the characters act a bit different. Oozeki was way more meek in the beginning of the manga. His character arc is really good as you see him come out of his shell and gain confidence in himself and the body that he has been training alone for years. In the anime they have him wrestle and put up a bit of a fight against Ushio as soon as they meet each other, which just wasnt the case at all in the manga, so I'm worried about how they are going to handle that going forward.

I still have hope for the anime but I have to give it a 3/5 based on the first episode, nothing really stood out.

There is some supremely old school charm going on with this one. Another sports show I will be biased about since I enjoy Sumo IRL. It';s one of the few sports when being televised that I can catch regularly. That and I have been to both Sumo arenas in both Tokyo and Osaka. Now while they were in competition though sadly. Some day.

I am just hoping the show will continue to build upon the pageantry of Sumo itself and why so of their motives and actions matter.

This could be a lot of fun judging from just this first episode.

Fukushi Ochiai is in this one too Now I'll be confused all season switching between sumo voice and baseball voice.

That episode was just fun!

My bois from Rugrats: adventures in diapers have all grown up lol.

In all seriousness, it looks lit. I'll have to check it up later. I haven't seen a sumo anime yet.

I was actually surprised how good it actually is.

I didn't expect anything from it since it is a sports anime and I didn't care for the character designs, the writing is actually not bad.
It got me interested so far,

I will be following this one and see where it goes

I've been waiting for someone to do an adaptation of this series for a while. The manga has amazing art but the story and characters felt very similar to Eyeshield 21. Hopefully, the actions scenes can keep up their quality. Pretty good first episode; looking forward to the rest.

Really liked this. My go-to sports anime of the season for sure.

While in Japan I watched a lot of Sumo with my father-in-law. It really is a fun sport to watch.
