The first episode is now up: https://www.crunchyroll.com/merc-storia-the-apathetic-boy-and-the-girl-in-a-bottle/episode-1-the-apathetic-boy-and-the-girl-in-a-bottle-777976

Episode 1

So it begins with Yuu and his companion in a bottle setting off on a journey, and they run into trouble when a behemoth attacks leaving Yuu on the edge. A small rabbit monster tries to help, but that small fry is no match for this guy. However, Yuu's magic turns that beast in to a friend. And off on a journey the two go with Jamo giving them a ride and that bunny tagging along. That was ok, and while it was far from being anything special, at least it made for something decent to watch, just not a must-watch show.

This was okay, pretty standard for a fantasy series. We're introduced to the MC right away as he meets a mysterious girl in the opening minutes. The OP song is smooth and lighthearted.

There is not much of a fighter but he does make good usage of his powers. I think the main selling point may be the character chemistry here especially between Yuu and that blue haired girl. Have to see if this show improves. I don't see this as anything very special at the moment.

How does this compare to the first episode of Radiant?

It feels to me like this targets a slightly younger audience. The "monsters" in this remind me of a Pokemon-type series - even the "evil" one is kinda fuwa fuwa.

I actually like the premise - instead of fighting monsters, MC can "heal" them and make them friendly. But it would have more impact if there was a real threat to the monsters, and showed the danger to fighting them. Nothing really happened this episode, other than a bit of world-building.

I personally found Radiant more interesting. I'd show this series to young kids who are really timid around pets. MC is a mirror for that.

Granting that this is a first episode, and that there may be more to come as far as obstacles, dangers, and what have you, this felt like a more character and exploration driven story. Also with a large emphasis on the cute factor. Not that that is necessarily a bad thing. One thing I did like about this episode was that the story didn't pretend that violence wasn't a solution to the monsters, but that they preferred the non-violent method of healing. What I found odd was the time skip from when the MC is missing his dad and the next scene. What happened to dad? Is he still missing? I would have assumed dad has something to do with this journey (as usual in anime).

So..the merchant got a little kid who's afraid of his own shadow to guard his caravan?

Where did the kid's mom go?

Yeah definitely a Pokemon vibe to this...this season is too crowded to go outside of my weelhouse

Cute. Don't know if I'll end up finishing it, but at least it's more enjoyable than Zombieland Saga.

*a small round of applause*

The drain jokes remind me of a certain sequence in Noucome, so bonus points for that.

Divorced after his dad realized he could just buy girls for 10 gold pieces at some random store. Then his mom realized that his dad realized he could just buy girls for 10 gold pieces at some random store.

Waifu in a bottle

So Sting is a young cleric who battles by casting healing spells on the enemy. Maybe the monsters are just in a Berserk state, and he's casting a status heal?

Anyway, it's cute; I like it.
