I'm sure many people may write this off as cynicism, but I am always skeptical about people who are constantly 'happy' and such. No, it's not because I have an upsetting life or anything like that, but how someone can be smiling or have an upbeat attitude 24/7 (or close to that) slightly irks me.

Granted, there may be legitimate circumstances surrounding their attitude.
Are they doing it to simply hide their inner sadness?
Maybe it's to spread this joy to others as showing empathy, knowing what others are going through?
Or perhaps this is just the person's true nature?

Whatever the case, I was wondering if anyone else has felt the same.
Or if anyone is willing to shed some light on this whether it be generally or from personal experience.

I knew someone who smiled all the time when she was around people to hide the fact her husband beat her almost every day. She didn't want people to pity her and constantly ask 'what's wrong' and 'are you alright' so she tried to hide it. Eventually she broke down in tears, couldn't smile that day...

The answer though, really depends on the person smiling. Hell they could be one of those types that don't know actual emotion and smile to try and fake emotion. Never really know with out knowing the person's private life really.

I can not understand why it is hard for you to imagine that it is the true nature of some people as people are different. Some people are able to focus on the bright, good and positive side of everything, and this helps them to be genuinely happy.

until I discovered the natural sleep medicine melatonin I was angry, aggressive and looked for nothing good to live for. I still have ups and downs in my life, but I face them in a realistic way instead of depressing and wanting to run from them. and yes I have that annoying bubbly attitude but factor in cynical and sarcasm with dark and morbid undertones. it's always a party in my head!

Thanks for the replies, especially the ones that were more personal.
I guess it really does depend on the person.

Maybe it's just my skepticism that assumes some people are faking it.
I didn't mean to sound insensitive if people were going through tough circumstances, so that's my bad.

I've been described as one of those people a couple times. As I'm sure people who've seen some of my posts are aware, it's not quite accurate. Granted, I'm generally pretty content (though unfazed might be a better descriptor), but I try to seem more carefree than I actually am. There are a combination of reasons, but one that hasn't been mentioned yet here is that I feel worse if I think that by letting the facade slip, I've introduced unnecessary drama/unhappiness into someone else's day. I'm also just generally uncomfortable with people knowing anything about me. . . So there's that, too. I can't even tell you why, really.

If i was rich, slept for 10 hours a day, eating healthy 24-7.

Id be one happy man.

But living a life of responsability, you deal with it, and i dont look upset or depressed around people.

People think im weird or a silent type who doesnt like to talk or socialize, you dont watch or do anything interesting.

To you, im an antisocial uninteresting person. Nothing is stopping me from putting a smile on my face ot getting to know someone. I dont have a problem talking to people, i just choose not to most of the time

Why would i be upset all the time?

You have to be happy, even though the world trys soo hard to make you feel like shit.

Only real men and woman persevere through hardship

I've only really met one person like this but it was a long time ago. Now that I'm older and seeing this topic it got me curious of to what was his secret. Was it a mask or was it genuine? I guess what some people say here. It depends on the person. But to me happiness is an emotion that lasts a certain amount of time. Seconds, days, years, etc. It comes and goes.

Would you prefer I'D be a cynical asshole who doesnt give a dam about your emotions and wellbeing, and constantly telling you how everything is bullshit and things could be a lot better than they really are. Carrying with me all of this negativity revolving around everything you think to be good enough, destroying your hopes and dreams in the process, and basically sucking the life and fun out of life.

I knew someone who was happy all the time. However, it was just a facade that she presented whenever she was out in public. Be it school, family, friends, etc. She only happened to let me be her confidant. Sometimes you just can't take people at face value, in a literal sense of the expression.

Do you mean me? Or were you referring to someone else?
I'm not really salty. Just curious, really, and wanting to hear others' opinions.

If someone is happy ALL the time they are either suppressing something deep inside themselves or have never experienced the same types of occurrences as a regular person. Many people CLAIM to be in a constant good mood, but I'm talking more about it as a mental condition.

For example, our friend Ivokyuftaf6666 doesn't have this condition, he's just a positive kinda guy.
