Well, CR has finally put out it's first official info on the 2018 Awards and it's.. a thing.

Supposedly they revamped the awards based on audience feedback but the only real positive change was the switch from Best Hero/Villain to Best Protag/Antag. The silly/stupid Best Boy and Best Girl are still there. And, worst of all, they completely dropped all of the genre categories as well as the score category. Ugh. Oh, and for some reason this year there's just shy of a million official judges.

Well, with no genre awards I've pretty much lost all interest in this years awards before the voting has even opened.

There was far too many categories before. This is better, providing the nominations are not complete shambles and evenly represented I think this will be a cracker.

I don't mind for categories as much. What I find ridiculous are some animes winning certain categories they don't deserve!!

Based on last years awards. I fell pretty confident I can call the winners right now and save the company some money

It's that time of year again, and I'm hoping they do a good job in selecting the nominees. The first awards were loaded with nominees from 3-4 shows that it wasn't really reflective of what the process is supposed to be. Anyway, this setup is an improvement over last year when there were just too many categories, some of them that I just don't care about.

The removal of genre awards is a mistake. Were there too many awards? Sure, but the fat was in the character awards.

We lose nothing cutting at least the Best Boy and Best Girl awards(Best Protag/Antag actually serve a purpose though, so they can stay, even if their outcomes are easy to guess).

Losing the genre awards is a huge blow, though, because it gave several shows a shot at getting some form of recognition, especially since these awards are so heavily decided by fan votes still(they really should just copy Geoff Kieghley's The Game Awards, where the panel has the heaviest weight in terms of votes, but fan votes still count, and thus can swing close categories, because the actual judges for last year's awards had revealed what the results would have been just from their votes, and it was night and day compared to the actual results).

So now there is a very legit chance My Hero Academia can sweep every single award, especially if it is actually nominated for everything, which, given the categories, it actually can be! I guess our only hope is some other show, like maybe Devilman Crybaby, plays spoiler in some categories.

Are they replacing the genres with anything at all. They just can't have a few awards and say "well goodnight everybody who payed near a hundred dollars to see this live in person". Lets just hope that it isn't like the previous years where one anime gets most awards. And hope that they show some variety in there nominations.

This is probably my biggest issue with them dropping the genre awards. It's a fact that now some shows deserving of recognition will not receive anything. While the exact winner is not a given, we can all already name off the short list of shows that will legitimately be up for Anime of the Year.

Enjoy that niche drama? Think that low key romance was great? Laugh your butt off to that Slice of Life Comedy every week? Too bad. None of them even have a snowballs chance in hell now that there's nothing for them to win. Unless you're one of the handful of Big Shows of the year you're completely out of luck.

I'm not really sure why there is so much contempt for the number of award categories from last year. There was only 3 or 4 more than this year and if they just dropped the trash Best Boy and Best Girl categories it would be an even closer count. It's not like they've cut 10 categories this year, they've just cut some of the most important ones while keeping some terrible ones.

I feel like they got rid of the genre categories due to each of them would probably be filled with anime not available on Crunchyroll since there was a fair share of anime that Crunchyroll didn't get this year. It's sucks since that's were a lot of different series could be found and have the spotlight. Whatever, still don't care about these rewards. Kind of hope "Anime of the Year" is an anime that's not on Crunchyroll like last year.

Personally, I wish they'd kept the genres in. It adds tons more in, for sure, but that's the kind of stuff I actually care about. I'm interested in seeing what people thought the best animes in certain genres were, so I can pick a genre I like or want to start watching and branch out from the latest and greatest to others. The categories for this year are interesting, I'm curious as to what and who wins what, but I'll be checking the winners out of mild curiosity, and I might, if I'm feeling bored, check out the nominees from a few categories, like best anime, best boy, best girl, or best protag/antag. But I'm not going to be making a point of writing down the nominees, like I did when it included genres.

Also, I don't know about anyone else, but I didn't recognize any of the six nominations in 11 of the 15 categories, and of the four categories I did recognize even one of the anime nominated, I only knew three in one of them, two in another, and one in the final two... I haven't been super keeping up with anime, but I thought I'd been pretty good about dropping on here to add anything remotely interesting to my queue! Apparently not? Or is it surprising to everyone?
