Why is it that if the OP gets deleted the forum gets closed? Why not just keep the forum going even if the OP is not their especially if they haven't posted in it in ages?

Honestly, I also wonder why topics get locked whenever OP nukes, but I think that it is an anti-spam measure.
Congratulations on thinking about this question!

probably saves server space or maybe they don't want the nuked user to return as a guest to see people still giving them love after they have chickened out and nuked themselves.

I mean, the simple answer is "it's the policy", but there are some reasons behind it. Consistency for one - it makes it far more consistent if any deleted account (whether deleted by staff or mods, or self deleted) has its threads closed. Many threads are stuff the poster was interested in, so continuing the thread makes no sense, and picking and choosing as an outsider can be interesting. There's nothing stopping someone from creating a new thread to continue the conversation and even link to the closed thread if they know of it (unless it was closed for other reasons, of course).

Some people take pride in the threads they start, and want to make sure they're associated with those threads for whatever reason. I don't get it, but it is something I've seen complaints about, and those folks want to make sure that any of their threads are gone when they leave, or are removed if they are leaving the site.

It also helps cut down on necro thread resurrection, which I know annoys some people more than others, but is something that generally can be avoided if deleted user threads are closed.

Personally, I can see reasons why some threads could be left around, and I don't patrol the forums looking for deleted users just to close their threads (other than scams and spammers, of course). But when a thread gets reported for having a user that no longer exists, I'll go ahead and close it.
