In case people are wondering about the "1 hour special", it's actually 2 episodes, not a single 1 hour episode.

Also, third episode will air next week (no break)

And the reason for that is because it's airing in the same time slot as Hinomaru Sumo, which is taking a break this week. So it all works out. In any case, the first two episodes are now up on Crunchyroll.

https://www.crunchyroll.com/boogiepop-and-others/episode-1-boogiepop-and-others-1-780854

Episode 1

And that cloaked girl is back on the case as Touka Miyashita has taken on her alter-ego as Boogiepop to save humanity. Her first client is Takeda as she's out to defeat a monster, but she really didn't do anything but point the others in the right direction. And then she disappears just like that. Pretty much, this is all setup here as the main characters assemble in Touka, Takeda, and Nagi. Now onto the second episode.

Episode 2

As it turns out, the one who wrote those books is none other than Nagi, who is using her father's name as her pen nam. That Saotome guy is such a creep drugging some poor girl and turning her into a monster, all while there's a manticore on the loose who has assumed the identity of Minako Yurihara after eating her. Nagi has been working hard on the case there trying to get into Saotome's head. Pretty interesting stuff on Nagi there as I remember just how diligent she is in Boogiepop Phantom.

It has been quite a long time since I saw Boogiepop Phantom and I don't have a very good recollection of that series, and I can see why as it's one of those shows that is hard to understand. Anyway, it has been an interesting start there going to show that there's a lot wrong with the world. The world is filled with mistakes, indeed.

Pretty interesting start.

I'm interested in seeing how much they plan to explore the human psyche and character emotions. Boogiepop is such a mysterious character. When it takes on the an apperance of someone else, I wonder how much they can understand their feelings.

There's an eerie sensation about the story too although it's too early for me to tell how much it will develop over time. Theme songs are neat.

This world is filled with mistakes.

I couldn't agree more.

I'm sure you know this already but you don't need to remember what happened in Phantom for the 2019 series. Phantom was confusing as it took place after the events in the first light novel.

Good start. The one problem for me is that given the shifting time frames, it seems clear this show would be better binged watched than waiting a week in between episodes... but I don't feel like waiting until all eppies are available. That means I'm inevitably gonna miss things, but I guess it can't be helped.

This seems like it's going to be a very confusing series. Plus, everyone looks very bored. It's hard to believe that no one would react to a girl supernaturally flipping a police officer. Hmmph.

I'll keep watching, though. It could turn out to be good.

Yeah the story randomly jumping around in time plus the fact that they are bombarding us with random names is making this confusing.

Seems like they are trying to combine Paranoia Agent with Elfen Lied.

I am trying to figure out if the end of episode one, was the end of the story or what.

I think a lot of the characters look too similar too.

I think that's the case. Boogiepop said at the end of the episode that she wasn't the one who defeated the monster. In episode 2 we see that Nagi is hunting down the Manticore. I think next episode we'll see Nagi killing it and then it'll lead to the scene with Boogiepop's goodbye. Although this is just the first volume and that scene makes it sound like Boogiepop is gone, which is weird since obviously she'll be back.

Whatever's going on, I'm sure it'll be easier to follow once this arc is finished. All the sudden time jumps made me confused for a while. I really wish they aired the first 3 episodes together.

i had the same issue. it dosen't really bode well when the 2 first episodes had random time jumps without any warrning. i just don't hope this will become a trend for the rest of the show.

Unfortunately, Boogiepop's light novels tell the stories in a non-linear fashion. So the anime might put people off.

I don't like the modern character designs... I prefer the ones in the light novels.

I haven't watched Boogiepop Phantom so the first 2 episodes took me some time to digest...

The storytelling makes me think that Nagi is the actually lead of the story, not Boogiepop.

You don't need to watch Phantom as that is more of a sequel.

And I'm totally on board with the non linear storytelling.
