Synopsis

On a planet far from Earth, there is a kingdom full of smiling faces. Princess Yuuki is 12 years old, and about to enter a sensitive age in a person's life. Everyday, she cries, laughs, and sometimes, her heart throbs with excitement. All the while, she lives merrily in the royal palace.

Filling her days are her loyal vassals: her tutor Reira, Izana who assists in political affairs, the leader of the chivalry Harold … and then there is her childhood friend and aide Joshua.

"Yuuki! If you have spirit and guts, you can do anything!"

"…No, not this again! Joshua, be nobler!"

Stella is 17 years old and a capable, reserved soldier. However, she is always smiling ... for smiling is essential to living.

This is a story of two girls born on distant planets.

The first episode is now up on Crunchyroll: https://www.crunchyroll.com/the-price-of-smiles/episode-1-the-girl-from-soleil-780841

Episode 1

Yuki's happy-go-lucky attitude doesn't exactly paint the whole picture of the situation the kingdom she is in. Anyway, this was mostly about a game of capture the flag in a mecha simulator, and not much happens here as the princess is just doing what she needs to do, and the big test comes once Stella shows up.

Okay, a science fiction show with mecha, a nice orchestral OST, and characters that I like. I'm invested.

Tatsunoko Production is known for a lot of sci-fi type shows. However of late they've been doing mostly reboots of old properties. I like this totally original story that has a good dose of sci-fi while keeping up with modern trends in anime.

So I guess he price of smiles is lying.

I don't usually like mecha shows, but I'll give it a try.

I just don't want to bog myself down like last season when I watched 20 shows..which became a huge investment. I'm not sure I want to watch the big name shows this season, "Promised Never Land" and "Shield Bro". I know enough about them to know they are depressing.

I feel like they're setting up a potentially really engaging political drama with mecha fights. They set up Yuki and Joshua's relationship and flaws nicely (they treat everything like a game and don't think about long-term consequences, because there have never really been any for either of them), and I'm interested in seeing how the realities of war and diplomacy change them. Especially once they have some time to introduce the other side of this conflict.

I tend to get the School-live vibe with this anime. Everything seems too nicey-nice with the lead. I pretty much have to agree with OtterSeaborne that the realities of war will most likely end up changing them. Hopefully they stay together through it all but I'm not quite sure they will.

Re everything being nicey-nice: It's called "the price of smiles". They had to show us the smiles somewhere, and now they can show us the costs.

The Price of Smiles ( Egao no Daika ) EP # 1 1 – The Girl From Soleil

This was a surprise a mix of political intrigue / sci-fi / and mechs

Mechs need better explanations / the fight scenes just average / but the tactics were good

A young Princees Yuki has a lot of weight on her shoulders ruling after her parents died trying to make the planet a better place She has her loyal aide Joshua and her tutor Reira

She has some dissension especially from pilot twins Yuri / Lune They think the royal rule is outdated

In realitly though Yuki has no knowledge of the conflicts beyond the border.

I can't be the only one immediately reminded of the Black Panther coronation ceremony.

Wakanda forever! Kingdom of Soil, be eternal!

I was going to say Aldnoah.Zero in terms of the obvious parallels they're setting up from the ED, but I guess the thinly veiled saccharine front for the princess would be a fair comparison for School-live. There's definitely 'break the cutie' vibes from this.

It is, in the bare bones bottom way, a show about growing up and finding your place. Also I keep reading the title as Prince of Smiles. But i am an idiot what do i know??

Well, I didn't go into this with any expectations, but it's certainly nothing like what the synopsis made it sound like- I thought it might be a kinda Castle Town Dandelion in Space or something, lol. The title is most fitting, however, and it has mecha- Color me interested.
