I see volume 11 has just been released - I can't really see this getting a second season so I guess we will be left hanging perpetually...

I don't see it getting translated to English either

So are the Xi communicating with Kei in his dreams like the Buggers in "Ender's Game". Are they trying to tell him everything is just a misunderstanding and humans and Xi can live peacefully?

I'll bet that the answer is far more stupid than the mystery itself. We may be better off not knowing.

HOOfan_1 wrote:Kei Does he really not know Minghua likes him, or is he just playing dumb because he doesn't want to outright reject her?

He's the male lead of a harem anime surrounding VILF's ( Vehicles I'd Like To Fuck ). Frankly, we're lucky Kei can even dress himself.

Is Phantom just being paranoid and distrustful, or do the Americans really want to knock the Japanese down a peg?

Like I was saying earlier; Because of the nonsensical 1 Anima per fighter airframe rule the Japanese have essentially "stolen" Anima slots from Sweden and America. Realistically, there is zero chance either country would allow that. Sweden especially, as the Gripen is their only domestically developed fighter. Without the ability to create a Gripen Anima, Sweden is defenseless unless they want to try and dust off the Gripen's predecessor and give it a whirl with a <checks notes> previous fighter that was retired 14 years ago and now sits in a museum.

The US allowed licensed production of the SDF's J variants of the F-16 and F-2 so them being in the series makes at least a whiff of sense. But there's zero reason for a Gripen to be anywhere near Japan.

Though, again, this a bottom tier VILF series whose female characters are more VISICPUWFAHOTIIRHT. ( Vehicles I Suppose I Could Put Up With For An Hour Or Two If I Really Had Too ).

Honestly, I can't stand Minghua Song much in this show. Too childish of a personality with an obvious puppy crush on Kei.

You could apply "too childish of a personality" to almost every female character save possibly Phantom who at least treads somewhere around bitchy teenager. But, yeah, Minghua is a meaningless character in an already pretty meaningless show. I can only assume the author was like "I want to fuck a fighter jet, but also have someone else cook and do my laundry".

I really wish they would remove Kei from this show and just focus on the others instead. Otherwise, this show so far has been a strange one for me.

Some of the characters have appealing traits but aren't developed enough at all. Meanwhile, the sci-fi elements and action keeps me coming back for more each epsiode. The story is not well written at all imo and really needs an improvement. It's so loose and really didn't hook me from the start. The finale looks to be rushed with this pacing. Haven't read the LN yet so I have no idea how faithful this was but as an anime viewer, I'm pretty underwhelmed by this show.

1 more episode left.....

Episode 11

It's go time as Kei and the girls are battling the Xi off the shores of Shanghai. And leading the Xi is the mothership whose EPCM is so strong that it takes control of their allies. While Gripen and Rhino manage to make it out of the battle, they need to refuel, so they make an emergency landing in Shanghai instead of returning to the carrier, and they land in a ghost town. But they find shelter in the airport that's still running. And then there's something unusual about Rhino seeing that Kei heard a strange noise, and can't exactly figure out what it is. That was pretty eerie to see Shanghai all desolate, yet with the airport still working line normal. One more episode left as something big is about to happen involving Rhino.

I got the impression that Gripen, Kei and Rhino are all in a Xai simulation now after being presumably captured during the battle...

Another possibility is that Rhino is in fact working for the Xai.

Episode 12 (Finale)

As it turns out, Rhino was more of a Xi than an Anima thanks to the USAF seeing her only as a tool and not a person. She's crystallizing the place, and Kei managed to escape Shanghai with Gripen, but Rhino is in hot pursuit all while she's brainwashing Gripen. It's there that her bond with Kei overcomes the crystallization, and in turn they defeat Rhino, while Eagle and Phantom take out those pursuing Xis created from the airport. So the operation was cancelled, and the only thing that matters is making it back alive, which is exactly what happens there. Pretty much, that was a wasted operation, but it led to some thrilling action there at the end, an appropriate enough way to end this.

Final Thoughts

This show has some things going for it, but in the overall scheme of things, it was just average. The action, the characters, and the story concept are the good points about this show. On the flipside, this show's story is just poorly put together as it is a cliche-ridden mess, all while the show seemingly gets away from its objective opting to spend lots of time on pointless character interactions, all while the animation outside the action was lacking. That said, it was a fun time to be had with the right mindset, but definitely not for everybody to say the least.

I thought this was a huge disappointment, almost among some of the worst sci-fi anime I've seen in recent years. Almost though but it's still pretty bad.

The story is so loose with no proper resolution or purpose at all. It felt like a huge advertisement for the light novel with an underdeveloped cast. No, I don't see character development as Gripen "showing more human emotions". The final few episodes felt like they were rushed with little buildup. The Rhino heel turn made me had no impact at all on the story in the end.

I take back what I said about characters being somewhat appealing. None of the main cast are, especially Kei.

I thought it was ok - I had thought it would turn out to be heavy fan service harem tropes but it wasn't.

The story was a bit plodding and wasn't particularly logical but if it got another season I'd give it a go.

They pulled the old "tricked you into thinking Rhino was going to betray them...but no she really isn't...nah that was a trick too...she is"

So why did she let Kei fuel up the jet?

"We want to return the Earth to what it should be.....covered in crystals"...huh?

Then in the end, they say they still aren't even sure what the Xi want.

So, we get the answer to exactly zero questions that were asked this season...."Howis Kei connected to Gripen?" 'What exactly are the Xi, and what do they want?" "If you want the answer to these questions, please go buy the Light Novels, still in progress.

I already voted this show as the biggest disappointment of Winter 2019, and this episode only strengthened that vote.

5/10

I'm wondering if Rhino actually got killed, because she appears to be on the cover of Volume 7 of the light novel. Unless they skipped a lot of content in the anime, or even changed the story for the anime, I doubt they got through 7 volumes and there are anime on the over of volumes 4, 5 and 6 who never made an appearance in the anime.

More then likely we will see more of this might be a movie or a ova etc. I am looking at what's gone on with shows like arpeggio of blue steel, high school fleet, girls und panzer... look at how long it took for kancolle to get its second season and that was announced at the end of season one.

I watched it all. but it didn't move me much. Of course everything seems a let down after Zombie Land Saga.
