Now there are two of those

Kotobuki is also on VRV's HiDive channel, but you're in Canada? Then you can't access VRV.

I think I'll enjoy this show just fine, since I even had fun watching Conception last season, and I know the planes from my childhood as a... well... boy who liked planes. And built model kits (badly, even as an adult). And ha, I've been mispronouncing it "gripe - en" for decades. Swedish: http://www.pronouncekiwi.com/Saab%20Gripen

Oh and to me "bae" means BAe https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_Aerospace

I wrote this at the Cute Girls Doing Cute Things club on MAL yesterday

Girly Air Force first impression: "Our robot pilot girls don't care about thousands of other teen boy dicks getting blown up by aliens, but YOUR teen boy dick is SPECIAL, now please Date A Live them so that they will save us"

It seems like the plane girls can be separated from the planes so you can use them for sex https://youtu.be/yowHM6nqu60?t=98

I don't know how that works, like do they have a maximum operational range? Do you have to bring three jet fighter planes to the onsen so your harem can use the baths? Stay tuned to find out

I'm skeptical about the apparent semblance to Date A Live, since DAL is generally mediocre to me. I actually enjoyed Conception more, because it was (even) less serious and (even) more ridiculous. Here we have innocents getting killed onscreen right off the bat, hmmmm.

"Moe military", then. I've mostly enjoyed the ones I've seen too, so it's an interesting niche to play with. Thank you for the list link.

I linked that only to be like "look how I thoroughly embrace the silly thing!" I enjoy having poor taste. But hey, you're welcome

And this differs from FOX talking head saying she didn't have to play Mass Effect to know it was trashy and full of sex... How?

It does at least look like a fun show, so I'll probably give it a shot. I'm enjoying everyone talking about different jet models and seeing how the show's depiction of this one or that lines up. I like learning new things. Is there a good general resource anyone can recommend for looking up that kind of information? I mean, there's Wikipedia, but it's Wikipedia, you know?

I want to enjoy this show and probably will if it's any good... but I can't help asking the question:

Wouldn't it be easier to just make the plane automated instead of a whole separate humanoid robot to pilot it?

also why do they all have be girls? oh Japan.

Gotta give the crowd that loves shows like Girls Und Panzer, Strike Witches, Kancolle, and Upotte!! their fix. That's just good marketing, after all. There's a niche between the moe and military otaku niches to be filled, a moe-tary otaku niche if you will.

I loved 3 of those shows in fact two rank in my all time top 10 (GuP and SW) and hated one with a passion (Kancolle), But I just can't get into this one

Being a series about jets it's notable how damn lazy is.

For starters. The series starts with a lot of explosions and screams but nothing of consequence. you can spot the protagonist because is the only guy not trying to survive while the ship where he's thraveling is sinking. Looks up ahd aah the enemy.Shitty CG generic aliens with no shape whatsoever what move with no aerodynamic whatsoever. But hey, here comes the airforce, the best that humanity has to defend us.... wait... Mig 21s? Seriously? A plane from Vietnam? My guts begin to think "Hey, this is Area 52 with the exact same CG of 15 years ago!" I get that today there's a bunch of them operative in some remote countries, but come on, if they're escaping Shanghai, at the very least a J10 would be a decent alternative.
Then oh yay, the gripen. Looks... cool? Mean, the 3d Model looks amazing but the shiny colors prevent you to find any interesting detail. The rest is a bad CG fest, a main character with the empathy of a brick and two love interests in which i'm not interested.
Maybe 2018 left a too high bar.

Lol - thank you for that - had me chuckling

In a way, a sort of heritage can be traced back to the 2D plane girl waifus of World War II:

Douglas Bond, a psychiatrist for the 8th Air Force in England, observed how devoted to the aircraft the men became by naming them "Miss Your Lovin", "Flamin' Mamie" and so on. In these beloved female planes, noted Bond, "mechanical failure was akin to infidelity". Planes that were thought to have minds of their own were called names like "Shedonnawanna".

Dude I am a man and I thought this was meh at best. It's pretty much a rip off of Arpeggio of Blue Steel but with planes instead of ships. Sex has nothing to do with bad anime it's just bad anime

Might need to add that Arpeggio have a deep story - the manga version is still going on and it's amazing!
book 17 should be coming soon.

about this show, I will try the next episode.

Dang, I might have to pick up the LN in the future for this. The pacing isn't well done so far in terms of storytelling. I mean, at least for the second episode

Episode 2

Kei meets the first of the girl pilots in Gripen, who just goes by the name of her jet. The two go on a date and the purpose is that her psychy needs to be stabilized so that she can fly again. And then the truth hits in that Gripen isn't exactly human as she was created to fly the jets that stand a chance against the Xi, and failure means she gets scrapped. That was a nice date there, but then that truth there at the end is just cruel.

Well, this certainly follows some tropes of shows like Date A Live, and a much less ecchi version of Hybrid x Heart Magias Academy. There's even a hint of Evangelion in there.

Artificial pilots who for some reason need to consume ordinary human food, sleep and apparently grow like a human (if we are to take the "drink dairy to grow your boobs" comment at face value). The premise is certainly contrived and maybe even exploitative, but Gripen sure is cute, so I guess the show is doing what it set out to do. It's already better than Conception.

I'm under the impression that's a low bar to hurdle.

It is, but it was apparent that Conception would be trash from episode 1, and it kind of reveled in the fact that it was trash.

Girly Air Force at least hints that there can be something deeper to the show than "boy meets, girl and girl and girl and girl" how long that impression lasts, remains to be seen. Hopefully next episode gives us more to the story than "these girls need this random teenage boy to show them the meaning of life".

when recruitment is down release a cartoon! in all honesty I rather like this one so far. the pretty, bright pastel colors, the interactions. sure it's a stolen idea from countless many other things, but I'm liking the concept over all thus far. I'm impressed with the details to the planes and granted some plane knowledge to pass around, as an air force military brat I just couldn't help myself to be curious.

Episode 2 sure felt like it was taking its time.

Almost nothing happens. There are no dogfights and the only hard information was that Gripen needs to shape up or join the ranks of Pacifica Casull.

Nothing personal!

We got some humanization injected into our characters and even random JSDF dudes. It looks like they really don't like being 2nd string, or they know something more about Gripen. That was it though. Gripen was cute, but it's early in for such little intrigue and simple slice of life.
