From the first episode I wasn't sure which direction this series was going - it could have gone for heavy fan service but luckily it went for cute.

It could still all go horribly wrong of course but I'm thinking it could be ok.

One thought though - from the intro/ outro it looks like Kei becomes the co-pilot but wouldn't that mean he was constantly blacking out with all the high G maneuvers in combat with the Xai?

That was my first thought...it would completely break the premise of the show, unless he ends up being some artificial being as well. The way Gripen described herself though, she is just a part of her airframe.

For a show with such a lazy and ridiculous premise the least it could do is be an interesting trash fire.

But now it's committing the gravest sin of all: Being boring.

For a show I had no expectations for imo the way they draw characters (particularly Gripen so far) is way better than most other shows this season. Subjective for sure, but I wasn't expecting anywhere near that level of effort.

It is kind of off kilter now that you mention it. The CGI and story are lazy as can be but there's effort put into the 2d work.

I guess when moe is all you've got going for you, you better put some polish on it?

When the guy from the base sent her to him did he expect them to have sex?

It was a calculated possibility but I don't think he was sure that would happen. It was basically a field test to determine if Kei effected her operating time, which he did by about 333% (3 vs 10 hours.)

Okay, so I watched Ep. 1 and it's a fun watch as long as I just roll with it and accept everything I'm being given at face value. Pretty standard fare, nothing special, but also the kind of fare I enjoy so no harm, no foul.

for the record, I watched all of those with pleasure. Although Girls und Panzer was my favourite.

I was laughing as much at myself as the creators. I love how someone with an apparent chip on their shoulder all but accused me of being a feminist. .. Like that's a bad thing.

The whole genre makes for a great opportunity to indulge in some hilarity and amusement by contrasts, doesn't it? Cute moe girls roaring tanks through a battlefield somehow feels like the setup and punchline skillfully rolled into a single statement.

Ah, don't let it get to you too much if you can avoid it. There's always going to be someone upset by something you say, however benign.

It's pretty much a rip off of Arpeggio of Blue Steel but with planes instead of ships.

Thank's for mentioning Arpeggio of Blue Steel - I've just finished watching it and thoroughly enjoyed it!

These show's remind me a bit of Iain M Banks 'Culture' series - I wonder if it was one of the inspirations for these?

If you can find Arpeggio of Blue Steel Cadenza it's a movie that wraps up the anime story nicely

Episode 3

Kei has quite a long way to go in order to be a capable pilot, but his presence is absolutely required. Just when things were going good, Kei learns that his hometown has been destroyed. And then the truth about Gripen and the other girl pilots is revealed as they were born in a test tube out of Xi parts on the day of the test flight. It goes terribly wrong as a Xi attacks and Gripen falls asleep, but it's Eagle to the rescue. Eagle sure did make a splashy entrance there, but nevertheless Kei is going through a tough time after learning some really terrifying truths, and it will be interesting to see how he copes with it.

It's got some cute characters and fighter planes, but it's just not Gripen me.

The revelation about Gripen came... and went just about as quickly. There wasn't much time spent on emotion be it shock or dealing with it. The scenes pass and change so quickly. We get a dream and a montage and then he's over it and yelling for Gripen again. I did like the dream sequence. It was my favorite part this episode - particularly the mental leap to evil Gripen. I'm not sure if it's the lack of scene time or voice work, but the dream was the only time I felt engaged.

Gripen making the scarf and her detatched, "Did you fall for it?" was cute. Maybe Eagle will be the kick in the pants fun we need. I suspect we've got a whole lot of montages to go though.

So they had the Xi on the radar and could see it 10 minutes out from Gripen, but somehow they had no idea Eagle was right there in the same area?

I wonder if Gripen was made from the Xi that killed Kei's mother, and that has something to do with their synced brainwaves...either that or perhaps they have to use human DNA to help grow them and part of her DNA came from Kei's mom or a relative or something.

The training montage that was a date between Gripen and Kei, certainly gave this the Date A Live vibes.

I hope some more depth is added over the next few episodes.
