So, uh, the show just proved conventional weapons and piloting *do* work on the Xi? A 10 missile salvo took down 1 and Kei shot down one.

I mean, it was a Kongo class destroyer that was shown so we can assume the escort task force on radar is 5 of those as they're guided missile destroyers. Per the radar, they fired 10 missiles and took down 1 out of 12 Xi. That leaves the destroyers with a combined 440 missiles left. >.>

At a 10% hit rate the destroyers could have taken out the entire 12 Xi squadron and the 20 bombers behind it with missiles to spare for the big one. That's also assuming Xi heavy bombers have the same maneuverability as their fighters. Which is doubtful. The launching system on a Kongo can also launch all 90 of it's missiles in a remarkably short amount of time.

We know they didn't fire them all in the first salvo either because the ship shot we get shows it firing from it's front silos. ( Though it's also firing them straight up at a target directly above it which is stupid and ineffective but hey, what part of this show isn't )

TL;DR: The show just inadvertently proved that Anima are a complete waste of time and money. >.>

Everyone on this thread is having such an intellectual conversation about the intricacies of military and fighter jets...

And here I am thinking... whoa what a cool dogfight this episode. Nice soundtrack. Give me more! Haha.

Kei only shot one down because the anima was able to override the fly by wire systems - no pilot could make that maneuver.

what you're meant to think is "geeze, I want a Gripen hug pillow...maybe an Eagle hug pillow too"

They should rename the series "Darling in the Arpeggio of Blue Steel "

I applaud the show for it's relentlessly commitment to being uninteresting. Did anyone not see the "twist" coming there?

On a random side note, Gripen is apparently the only one of the three planes in the show Japan *doesn't* use. -.-

You'd think the yanks at least would opt for a fifth gen fighter for their cutting edge teenage girl based weapons tech though instead of an F-15. Having one of the girl's be named RAPTOR would at least be kind of funny.

It's a friggin' drawn show, they don't have to follow the rules of physics or technology. They could have them on the moon playing golf and drinking Tang, oh wait that's been done.

Don't forgot to add a Phantom hug pillow as well. I would get them but my waifu Minghua might find out and blow a gasket

Any pilot could make that maneuver because according to the official website the fighter jets in question were upgraded from their base models. They only glow stupid colours because of the girls "brainwaves". But otherwise, the underlying tech is available and could be used to simply build more effective fighter jets without going through the trouble of having to find them boyfriends. The upgraded fighters can obviously be controlled by a traditional cockpit system which the show just demonstrated is now modular and can be installed at the drop of a hat.

Granted, in reality that maneuver could only attempted in a 1 on 1 as you'd get shot out of the sky the second you did it with multiple enemies as you just shed airspeed and made yourself a nice slow target.

But anyhow, the only excuses we're given is g-forces but the numbers given are still within range of a modern fighter jet and magic alien brainwave deflectors that can mess up missile tracking. But the episode just proved that if you fire enough standard anti-aircraft missiles the Xi can't elude them all. They also can't deflect anti-aircraft cannons.

If you wanted to shoot them down the answer is moar missiles, cannon tech and bringing back the modern equivalent of anti-aircraft flak. Xi messing with your missiles? Air burst the assholes. The Xi's ECM helpfully tells you when your missiles are close to them. Use that as the trigger system. Moment ECM interference is detected, boom.

Hell, lob tactical nukes at them. Let's seem them dodge a nuclear air burst. The launching system on a Kongo class destroyer can load Tomahawks. So it can clearly fit a theoretical anti-air missile with a low yield nuclear warhead.

Anything's better then "Let's vat grow teenage girls and hope for the best". >.>

Actually, they do because we're in "military otaku" genre territory. It's giving us physics and tech. If it doesn't want to follow the rules then it shouldn't be talking about the rules in the show. ;p

Nah - basically the fly-by-wire is what keeps the jet flying because beyond a certain point it became too difficult for humans to keep up with all the adjustments needed to fly modern planes.

Part of that are protections to stop the pilot from doing things that are stupid or that could damage the airframe.

That's what the anima overrode in order to perform a maneuver that would be dis-allowed for a human pilot by the fly-by-wire system.

Kei had a good idea but the anima was required to pull it off.

Nah, all that would be required is one pilot or engineer going "Hey, we upgraded the airframe's strength so we should expand the performance limitations of the fly by wire.". It's already obviously been expanded to perform higher G maneuvers. This is purely a software issue and doesn't require an anima or a rando teenage boy to implement.

Honestly, there's no reason for Gripen to even have performance limitations on her fly by wire system because she is One With The Plane(tm) and all that jazz.

I mean, we all know the main reason for the show's premise is "We wanted cute teen girls in fighter jets". Problem is the show is taking itself more seriously than it's premise requires.

At the same time I’m a little angry the childhood friend is getting a bit shafted, but I also like gripen a lot and I ship her with the MC.

I still have a bit of trauma after tales of Xillia, why put a childhood friend that likes the main character into the story, when you are just going to have him act like an ass toward her, and not call him out on it. If it’s simply for the pure sadistic nature of watching the girl get neglected, then that is sick.

It is the tragic fate of the childhood friend character

So was Eagle sent by her Dad to find Kei and tell him that Gripen was about to be scrapped?

Seem's too unlikely that they would meet up by accident or that the first day she was allowed off base was that day?

If so, she made it seem like an accident. She didn't even mention Gripen until Kei asked.
