Plot Summary

In a barren frontier where people trade goods with each other in order to help each other survive. The Kotobuki Squadron are bodyguards for hire, led by a strict but beautiful squadron leader, an unreliable commanding officer, and a true artisan of a crew chief. Alongside pilots who don't lack for personality, they take to the air in dogfights, letting the engine noise of their Hayabusa fighters ring out in the skies.

The first episode is now up on HIDIVE: https://www.hidive.com/stream/the-magnificent-kotobuki/s01e001

Episode 1

So this begins with the girls having a meal, and then go onto the battlefield to shoot down a bunch of enemy planes. And after all that, they protected the blimp, but one plane got away, and while Kylie was told to not pursue it, after seeing the snake logo she just couldn't let him go and almost gets shot down. And then they go back to their homes.

I'm not exactly sure what to think about this, but this show sure did put a lot of emphasis on the action, and the animation is a CG job that just feels lazy. I got the feeling that it didn't have enough content to fill up an episode and it was stretching things out to make it long enough. Too much dragged-out action, not enough story, which is generally not a good way to open up things.

Ooh, they sure didn't waste time to get right to the point. The aerial fighter squadron consisting of the main characters don't play around on their jobs.

Kirie has my attention the most as one of the pilots. The aircrafts they use aren't anything too special (at least compared to say...Girly Air Force this season) imo. However, I like the scenery of the dogfights and actually flying. Much more realistic than I had expected and it went into good amount of details from the pilot's perspective.

It kinda reminds me of the good old dogfights I've seen in war movies. I agree with the story being a bit dull at the moment but it's the first episode so I'll wait to see where it goes.

Off too a good start, cant wait to learn more about the setting and the characters. I could do with the subtitles NOT being dead center on the screen, but terrible sub formatting is par for the course where HiDive is concerned. Crunchyroll definitly should have gotten this one.

While I enjoyed it. It felt at times like I was watching one long video game cut scene

That was a lot better than the description lead on. I swear my stomach dropped at the takeoff. The SFX during the dogfights were amazing. The main casts' personalities all fall into the usual tropes; we'll see if the writers use that to open up time to tell more story. But honestly if they keep up the quality of the dogfights I'll be satisfied.

Somehow I didn't really notice the CG until they cut to the girls and that was initially a big disappointment but...

Once I got into the actual action, that faded and I found myself really enjoying the show.

Putting the Kemono Friends level CG aside the characters felt kind flat and uninteresting and not very likable

Do my eyes deceive me, or were the throw away characters (I assume the guys who were playing poker at the beginning are all dead) were all hand drawn, while the main cast was CG.

It's not horrible CG....but it's not good CG either.

The first episode really didn't set up the story, mostly just minor world building and some tiny bit of character building. I can't exactly say I am impressed so far. It definitely seems to have taken inspiration from something like Tailspin. I guess "The Madam" is basically Shere Kahn. The guy in the snake plane is probably Don Karnage. I suppose he must have had something to do with the death of the grave visited by the short black haired girl at the end (watch the pilot end up being her father or brother or something).

What was with the flightless, extinct dodo bird flying there at the end. Do anime always need annoying mascots?

I hate HIDIVE's subtitles. On the FireTV app, they are tiny and have no contrast, I constantly have to pause and rewind to read them...not to mention all the nonsense that covers the screen when I pause. HIDIVE is completely lackluster about their apps. I really don't want to go to VRV, but if their subtitles are better for the Sentai stuff and they don't block my screen with pointless advertisements when I pause, I'll drop HIDIVE

the dogfights were pretty good, but the character CG is distracting

Dogfights seem like they'd be kind of fun to watch in VR if possible.

That stuck out to me too. Someone on Reddit said it's probably because 2D is more cost-effective for characters who won't have a lot of screen time, while designing fully articulated 3D character models for the regular characters would pay off over the course of the series since they'll be on screen a lot. Made enough sense for me to buy it.

I'm pretty sure that's the reason, but it only makes the CG stand out more. It's pretty bad when throw away characters look better than the main cast

I already knew that this was going to majorly be CG so no huge surprises for me. The dog fight was pretty good, if the series is filled with that I wouldn't mind.

I think the CG was actually done quite well. It felt much more fluid than what this studios has done in the past. It was also a decent, not great, but decent blend og CD and 2D animation. The level of details in the animations, the movements and the planes themselves are really good. As someone that plays a lot of WWII games and watches a lot of WWII documentaries, I can appreciate some familiarity with the planes. An interesting start. I wouldn't let the CG put you off with this one just yet, as long as it doesn't turn to shit like Berserk.
